This game is not for the faint of heart, but if you can get past the difficult learning curve, you’ll find one of the most immersive World War II games out there. At times, it felt like I was playing Band of Brothers, crafting my own combat memoir. I’ve seen some criticism that the assault system is not historically accurate. I would have to disagree; the game largely relies on the real-life Allied doctrine of the “four f’s”: find, fix, flank, and finish. The assault mechanic is less of a literal bayonet charge as much of a closing with the enemy and forcing them to surrender or flee; this is how the war was fought and won. This game does an excellent job of crafting a narrative and exploring the stress and horrors that come with war. Having to manage the morale of a veteran squad that has high stress from previous battles is challenging, but extremely rewarding when the battle falls in your favor. I’ve achieved a major victory for most missions, with the except...

TLDR: If you enjoy tactics games and war documentaries, especially the ones which focus on the experiences of the individual soldier, this game will easily be your game of the year, if not the decade. This is the first game I have played that I would be completely comfortable describing as a documentary. The dedication to historical accuracy is way beyond anything I've seen before, the maps are all based on real historical locations, the events all mirror true realities of soldiers in WW2, even the exact number and locations of enemy deployments is based on real historical data. There is very little pretence of a fourth wall here, there are quotes and historical elements present that your character could not possibly have had knowledge of, and there are times when the developer talks directly to the player to either explain a mechanic, or give historical background. This might turn some away, however for those interested in the history it gives a context to the events that really help...
Never written a review before this game, but it's a must on that case. That game is definetly not for everyone but for those who are into this will in my humble opinion love it. It really is different than anything similar I've played before. You feel the burden, you want to keep your men alive, you want to achieve the objectives...but at times it's not a easy feat to achieve both. I found myself pushing men to achieve the objective and feeling uneasy doing it...but these are the orders. You don't have a full intel of the battlefield and rushing can really lead to unnecessary casualties. Getting cocky get men killed but oftentimes just bad luck also. You learn along the way but still make mistakes. Your best crafted plan goes to hell, cuz the enemy also has a plan...or just great positions. And I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing but before every scenario (after meeting the germans) I felt a little bit of anxious starting it. Often ending with me calling it in for the day...
slow to start. once it gets rolling, it's the game you wanted.
With 144 hours with Burden of command. I enjoyed it a lot. Leadership RPG is a amazing genre. From ww1 to vietnam, Green Tree Games can have my money. The Cottonballers story is amazing and the different arcs each play through can have is so refreshing.
Wow... just wow! What a piece of art :) Just the art, the reports and the commentary alone will capture the heart of any WW2 aficionado. The game itself is well done, with a tiny detail here and there but it doesn't subtract from the fun. The system is a bit different from your regular RTS, but I didn't need long to get used to it. The RPG part is a bit light but still fun, and the story from the single (so far!) campaign is well made and interesting. Looking forward to see more from this one!
This game is so good. There are definitely some rough edges, with occasional bugs, performance issues, and disconnects between the RPG and tactical elements. There's also some poor communication about certain systems work. I think some of that is deliberate to allow you to learn some of the mechanics on the fly, gaining experience alongside your men (for example, the game never really teaches you how to deal with enemy armored vehicles), but it can be hard to tell what's deliberate and what's just another rough edge. But overall the tactical combat is compelling and many of the decision points in the RPG sections are tough (in a good way). You feel yourself getting jaded with the war as the game drags on and increasingly willing to take the off-ramps the game offers to avoid the worst outcomes of battles and preserve your soldiers. The game allows and even encourages you to lose missions without compromising your long-term prospects (after all, the success or failures of one fictiona...
This is the first game in years which gave me the old ; "Just one more turn. I'll go to bed after just one more turn". You become emotionally invested in your troops and the feature of "Only the last action is saved" makes decisions irrecoverable. Several times I have pushed the keyboard away in frustration (got my company captain killed, allowed an 8mm Italian machine gun take out my tank, etc...) only to jump back in after a cup of tea because, you know, can't leave the boys in the middle of the shit-storm I dumped on them. Not a game if you are looking for fancy graphics but if you want a slight taste of what battle is like mentally, check this one out. Worth every dollar.
The game is interesting, but it has the most annoying tutorial that I have ever seen.
A really unique Game, tackling WW2 and Warfare in general in an amazing way.
