Hypnospace Outlaw

It's kind of hard to explain Hypnospace Outlaw. It is, at heart, a game built out of the now-antiquated concept of digging up old files on a hard drive by various search methods. It really does boil down to 'find thing, catalog appropriately, move on' and that's it. However, that game is wrapped in one of the most brilliantly conceived packages. Those who weren't around for the late 90s internet really did miss out on something special - most web pages were independently hosted and owned, CSS hadn't become very popular yet, blogs weren't a thing, everything had a bootstrapped amateur quality to it that resulted in everything from atrocious assaults on the senses to path breaking innovations in page design that are with us today. It was before the term 'meme' entered popular consciousness and things like hamster dance were still new. I've seen this being streamed like 3 times, so might as well play it. Pretty cool puzzle game. I like the old internet aesthetics, plot was pretty good. Even if I knew where everything was, it was nice learning some new stuff by myself. Won't bother with the "catalog all pages" achievement though, just no. Shame DreamSettler is dead.

[i]Hypnospace Outlaw[/i] is a masterpiece of a game that only gets better as the internet we use gets worse. It goes way beyond using the Y2K aesthetic for nostalgia points and feeling retro, it uses it to create a world not too different from our own while establishing characters we never actually meet or interact with in any way beyond enforcement duty. [i]Hypnospace Outlaw[/i] also puts more effort into its Y2K aesthetic and universe than any piece of media I’ve ever seen that tried something similar. From the visuals, to the music, to all the collectable and entirely optional music videos, stickers, virtual pets, and so much more. The depth of content and fun things to interact with is genuinely overwhelming, and I mean that in the best way possible. Story and progression are super engaging both on first and repeat playthroughs, especially as there’s multiple ways to progress and there’s many optional objectives. this game has irreparably conditioned me to wiggle my mouse whenever a webpage doesn't load immediately 10/10
