If "Brigand: Oaxaca" was a restaurant, it would be a family owned, possibly the operation of one, single dad with way too much free time and way too much love for his grill he bought off of the local market. You're seated outside on a plastic chair in a small, dilapitated home with screaming children, mothers with vacuum cleaners & chanclas and the heat is unbearably hot, sweltering. There is a dog peeing on a wall with graffiti you're too sweaty to understand. The microbus that drove you here passes once every 2 hours, nicely driving alongside the corridos that are playing from a cheap radio hanging on a hook with its cable alongside it. The cerveza is too warm. There is not a single trace of urban life around you; only the mountains, the rainforest and the mosquitoes. Despite it all, there will never be another restaurant that will offer you the same level of hospitality that this one does. You might go back to your home after this one, get married, get kids, get a happy life, but th...

Janky but fun! Edit - Oops I misclicked the thumbs up sorry cowboy
I don't really like games that pride themselves in being difficult, and I never cared about all these 'real gamers play on hard' half-brains. Having said that - I love Brigand :D I don't think that any other game I've played in recent years made me feel like everything I do matters. No padding, no grind, no wasted time, no empty pointless procedurally generated crap - this game respects you as a player and as a human being. It's not only few dialogue choices here and there, but all of gameplay is so tightly crafted, that it slightly recalibrated my gauge for judging other games. Your inventory is so limited, that you can't even think about becoming a trash hoarder, but everything you pickup might turn the tides of the next battle - two grenades you found in the wooden box can swing the odds in your favor so much, that combat section you thought was unwinnable, now becomes a fair challenge :) You don't waste hours on gathering all kinds of junk laying around and trying to sel...
This is a janky mess of a game held together by duct tape and voodoo. Made using ancient programming language, with no budget and by just one person who probably never wrote a design document in his life, and it somehow works. Every piece falls into place and creates a very fun and soulful experience. Basically, Brigand is like if Deus Ex and Morrowind had a child and it grew up on a diet of banana beer and coca leaves. Yeah, it's ugly and difficult, but I love it. It's a pleasant game with a good variety of mechanics, choices and consequences. And it's still getting updated. Brian (the dev) is still adding new content and relentlessly patching the game while working on another separate title. It's good. If you like old-school RPGs and can look past jank, try it.
really fun and interesting. very obtuse, in a way that reveals a depth for who can power through. i wish it was somewhat easier to play, but not easier in difficulty.
I was looking forward to trying the DLC after I finished the main campaign, but decided to run through the game again while reusing none of the skills I used the first time. Equally interesting as it was the first time, and provided for substantially different beat-to-beat gameplay. Feels very reminiscent of how it felt playing Gothic 1, albeit with cocaine and techno ninjas. The writing is compelling without being melodramatic. The maps are more concentrated than other open world games to which this could be compared, but in this case, the avoidance of aimless ambling work in favor of keeping the player invested in the tasks they are juggling. The added mod construction tools are a bonus too, and allowed me to live out my fantasy of rebuilding a ransacked hut and cooking breakfast while watching the sun rise over the coastline of [redacted]. Polygons be damned, it was not infrequent that I found my character standing in place so I could better drink in the ambiance. This is a go...
