About This Game

The Asskickers is a modern tribute to 2D arcade beat’em ups.
Join Alex, Diane and Marcus in their action-packed journey through the heart of the modern urban jungles.
Wrongly accused, our three heroes will stand up to a corrupt political and financial elite and make white-collar criminals discover the lost art of asskicking.

-A unique and striking art style hand-crafted by French comic book artists and animators

-An action-packed adventure through 18 levels and three game modes (story, time attack, survival)

-Kick some butt with a friend in local co-op

-Chain up combos, special attacks and exclusive two-player collaborative attacks in true beat’em up fashion

-An epic soundtrack by French composer Gery Montet (Rayman, In Memoriam, Raving Rabbids : TV Party)

-Choose your asskicking weapon of choice with three different playable characters

I bought this game hoping for an old-school beat-em-up in the vein of Double Dragon, Battletoad, Streets of Rage and all the rest of their ilk. What I got instead was a SHODDY beat-em-up in the vein of... well, incompetently-made, poorly-thought-out games of any era you might care to name. The controls are stiff and wooden, the fighting is booring - basically no combo variation - and the main 'special move' (forward, forward, attack) is simultaneously hard to pull off in the heat of battle, and easy to fire off accidentally... at least if you're using a controller, which would seem to be the obvious choice. The actual fighting boils down to 'stunlock them before they stunlock you', aided by enemies walking in random circles around you most of the time. Said enemies are generally annoying and often use hit-and-run tactics which you are poorly-equipped to counter, since you can't move faster than a laid-back saunter - there's no run, dash or dodge-roll option. They also enjoy attacking...

Calling this game a bargain-bin Double Dragon, would be giving it a kind compliment. First of all, despite the steam store page claiming it has online co-op...It doesn't. Only local co-op is supported, which I can only imagine to be dreadful. There is no controller support for either X-Box 360 or Logitech F-Series controllers, which for a Beat'em Up is a deal breaker for me. Putting those two factors aside and looking at the game itself. It is bad. Enemy AI is abysmal. Enemies just stand there and let you beat them occasionally punching back, if they are not running away in fear. The combos are generic and uninspired. Not many move sets or combos with any of the 3 playable characters. Even the original Double Dragon for NES started you out with more moves, and that game is nearly 3 decades old. One of the worst Beat'em Ups on Steam. I would recommend Double Dragon Neon over this. It has online co-op with a steam friend, and is superior in every aspect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

The Asskickers is a beat em up. I love beat em ups. Um, this one has a few problems. 1.) You often clip through the environment, or your character and the enemy characters teleport 2.) Dreadfully short, lacks the replay value of other games like it 3.) One of the most important things in a beat em up is being able to quickly turn and deliver a blow to an enemy behind you. Instead of turning instantly, the character has a drawn out animation to turn, and if you press punch before he's turned fully, he performs a back attack. This might not be so bad, if the back attacks actually hit the enemies. One and two may not sound so bad, depending on how starved you are for another beat em up to play. Number 3 is the big killer, but if you can work past that, there are some positives. Namely, the design. Like a lot of older side-scrolling beat em ups, Asskickers likes to introduce new enemies and gimmicks each stage. In one stage you're on top of a train dodging signs and bars, on another y...

Good art, bad everything else sadly. Movement is floaty, hitboxes are off, attacks are inconsistent, and levels fail to allow you to progress at times. The idea is good, but even a little playtesting should have let the dev know to go a different direction with this one. Too many obvious problems in the short time I played, which is disappointing. I would love to see this recreated in OpenBOR. Maybe then, it would work properly. Until then, pass on this one.
GOOD

Non-Steam Version Actually Works This is the only redeeming quality: the *non-Steam* release reportedly plays far better—too bad that's not the version being sold here.

BAD

Broken Steam Build The Steam version is a technical disaster. It’s broken on so many levels, and every negative review you read is absolutely spot-on.
Controller Support Is a Joke Controller support is fundamentally busted, with zero fixes available. Expect endless frustration and completely unreliable input.
Achievements Don’t Work Achievements trigger at random—when they feel like it. Progress tracking is utterly unreliable and inconsistently broken.

Final Thought
Don’t waste your money. The Steam version of The AssKickers is a hot mess, riddled with bugs and poorly implemented features. Want to actually play the game? Pretty disappointed here because I LOVE "beat em ups" and i thought this was going to be a good 1 BUT alas it is NOT! 1st stage was fine, and then everything after that was crazy messed up, not being able to move my player, AI getting stuck running in place and essentially being unhitable. Unfortunately its another game I waited too long to test out and i cant get my REFUND. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND READ THE REVIEWS.......skip this one guys!!! I played 1 and a half stages and this has been uninstalled!

This game is a very fun attempt at a modern beat 'em up game. Beat 'em ups were always one of my favorite games to play as a kid so anything new is a welcome addition to that catagory. That being said, I would have to say that this isn't the best programmed beat em up. The enemies can be pretty tough especially when there are multiples of them. The fighting and enemies can get a little stale pretty quickly. But honeslty those are really my only gripes with the game. I got it on sale so I can't really complain about the content I got for the price I paid. Once you have figured out the combat it is a pretty fun game to play.
