My story with this game has been one of love and hate. The reason I bought the game (and created the Steam account) was the feeling it aroused in me when I remembered the good times I had as a child playing "Adventure" with my friends. However, the first impression with Alt254 was not as satisfactory as I expected, perhaps because I was looking for something similar to the experience lived with one of my favorite video games. For some reason I kept playing and, despite a few moments of frustration and having found some minor bugs, I managed to complete the game ... twice. Now I have seen a new update, but I don't think I will play a 3rd time again to see the changes. What I am clear about is that it is a game that deserves a chance (sometimes it makes you want to quit) and that it may become one of those hidden gems that every player should enjoy! Congrats to the team!

About This Game
Set out on a fascinating minimalistic adventure where you will explore an open world, full of surprises and enigmas, where every location is different and brings its own challenges. The very first puzzle will be to understand the world around you, its rules and mechanics.... but that is just the beginning. In your adventure, you will find broken pieces of your memory -- glimpses of a lost past, like a shattered mirror, its pieces scattered around the world. Maybe when you find them all, you will understand who you are and why you are here.
Alt254 invites you to a never-seen-before take of the action-adventure genre. Taking the key features and conventions of action-adventure games, Alt254 deconstructs one of the key genres in the history of games to express the true core of its key features. Lush landscapes are reduced to one of the smallest resolution ever seen in games, only 21x26 pixels, without losing its sense of wonder. Heart-stopping adventures and terrifying monsters are expressed with a single pixel. Weapons and skills are reduced to the bare minimum: you will need precision, speed and wits to beat enemies and overcome all kinds of hazards.
KEY FEATURES
- A unique adventure in an open world. Explore and discover at your own pace in this non-linear action-adventure and exploration game.
- Minimalistic abstract pixel-art style. You are ■, a nameless character represented by a single pixel. Every other element in the world is represented by a pixel -- the whole world is reduced to its more basic, abstract representation. Your imagination does the rest.
- A journey of mysteries and self-discovery. You wake up in a world that you do not remember and do not understand. Unraveling the mysteries around you and the world is your main task – and overcoming the dangers and challenges of this world, the only way to do it.
- Secrets within secrets. Alt254 presents you with a world full of secrets and mysteries. Some hide behind cryptic messages, buried deep under the earth, or in seemly unreachable places. Others lie at plain sight – but you will have to scan every pixel to find them…
- Fight enemies and monsters in a simple but efficient combat system, as minimalistic as exciting and thrilling.

In short, I really like the game, but I can't recommend it due to the bugs. I like the minimalist design. It's interesting how much can be conveyed with just a small number of multicolored square blocks. Music is also nice and retro. Good ambiance. Controls have been improved and are smoother than when it was first released. I don't like that the enemies respawn every time I use a save point to heal. As a design choice, I would have the enemies respawn in areas further away from the save point (that is, everywhere else), but not just around the corner. Maybe if they respawned everywhere beyond 200 blocks in any direction of the save point, for example. But, I suppose I can deal with it. What I can't deal with are the bugs, such as the time I went through a locked passage and activated a button, which played a "cut scene" of sorts. When it was over, the passage was closed again because the purple block used to open the passage was moved elsewhere, trapping me. No escape, had to rese...
I enjoyed this game greatly! You will be exploring and uncovering the an expansive landscape, solving puzzles, and finding secrets. There is a simple pleasure with the discovery and mastery of this minimalist, pixelated world. I would recommend Alt254 and think it deserves more love.
Great little action adventure game with fun puzzles and exploration. This game doesn't handhold and late game is confusing but it's easy enough to pick up and try things out/explore. That all said, there's an NPC in the game that will point out where things of interest are. Funderful
good game
Very nice small game. To beat the game you'll need around 10 hours, maybe less. You are a black ■ trying to get out from a dungeon (initially). On your way you meet other ■s. Some of them are good, some are bad. You will also find a lot of locked doors, pressure plates, colour-coded keys and much more. Game offers quite a big world with a lot of secrets and puzzles. I had a great time exploring the world, searching for keys and figuring out some mechanics necessary to find some shiny fragments. There is a few small bugs here and there (ie timer which is ON each time you start the game or small problems with map markers), but nothing to ruin your experience.
This game doesn’t only want you to explore its world, but also its mechanics. A lot of the information that you need to succeed in this game is purposefully obfuscated and it already begins with the game's low resolution. It will take you a while to realize that this pixel is a key while that pixel is a button. But you will soon learn to read the pixelated image on your screen and will explore the vast interconnected world. Additionally, many of the game's mechanics are also not spelled out for you. But the more you find out about the possibilities the more the world opens up to you and it was at times very satisfying to find obviously unintended solutions to problems I couldn't otherwise solve. Unfortunately, the nature of the game also gave rise to some frustrating moments. There is not much help you can expect from within the game and due to the small coverage, you also won’t get much from outside of it. Though the game’s creators are actually still active on the steam forum...
It's good.
