This game feels like a fever dream of rewinding your Grandmas attic-VHS tapes of her suburban childhood while using a solar panel placed in between giant melting redwood trees to power your box TV. I love it.

About This Game
Sarah began the rite, but was consumed.
Thou must complete it.
Delve into the dream of a dying town in 'Boreal Tenebrae' , a retro-style adventure with horror elements.
Taking cues from the fixed-camera angle games of the PS1 era, and the dream logic of works like 'Yume Nikki', vignettes beget vignettes in this web of Trees and Streets.
Explore the interweaving narratives of a northern community, cast adrift in an increasingly urbanized world.
The town is sick, anger seethes and builds like static in the signal. Will it navigate this sea of noise, or be washed away by the 'Degraded Wave'?
Solve the murder.
Find Sarah.
Complete the ritual.
The truth is deeper still...

Buyer beware: scam developer. *Initially, he sold the game on the pretense that it's a full product as just "Boreal Tenebrae." *People soon found out that the ending was actually missing and the game is incomplete. *The dev then promised that he's "going to be continually updating the game with content that will move it past the 'to be continued' but for now that is the end." *And now, he retroactively changed the name to "Act I." implying that this is, in fact, *not* a full game we all bought. PS. Don't mind my playing time. I was waiting for the game to actually be finished before playing. Now I guess I'll have to pay extra for that privilege, huh? It doesn't matter if it's cheap. A scam is a scam in my book.
Review in English: This game had everything to be one of the best indies I've ever played in my life: it has a surreal, intense, psychedelic and magnificent atmosphere, with its own philosophy. I could get going on and on and say a lot of other positive arguments; however, the game until this very moment is barely playable, all because of its countless bugs that make it impossible for us to continue with this incredible story. I found at least three different bugs in different moments of the game that forced me to start it over again. Therefore, unfortunately, I can't recommend this game to anyone, until all of those bugs are removed (which I think it won't happen). I'll have to satisfy myself by watching to some gameplay from some lucky guy who had the privilege to not face himself with any major bug throughout his journey, so that I'll be able to enjoy the narrative, which I repeat, seems to be incredible. Review em Português: Esse jogo tinha tudo para ser um dos melhores indies q...
Dammit! I feel bad because I do like the concept and atmosphere of this 2.5-3 hour "game" (reminds me alot of like Serial Experiments Lain anime)... and whats there is enjoyable. However I can not honestly recommend this "game" because it has some very huge flaws. First of all this used to be called "Boreal Tales", but as you can see it was renamed to "Boreal Tenebrae Act I", it seems like the developer had a cool idea but realised finishing the game would take more effort than expected so decided to split it into "episodes" with hope to finishing it one day... as of this review there has been no news about Act 2 for a very long time, since this seemingly was first published in itch.io... it seems it suffers the same fate as most games there, cool concept but ultimately ends up being a short demo.... the game ends abruptly and doubt we will ever see the ending. But lets say you just want to experience this demo cause it seems appealing to you... well the developer also messed up wha...

Hits a lot of my buttons, including but not limited to: -tense but loving relationship between sisters -dreamlike atmosphere, enhanced by the graphics -the music!! and the atmospheric sounds really add to the experience -a few well executed horror moments that spooked me Very excited to replay when the game has an ending.
Fantastic game but a bummer that the games ending feels so lackluster! The actual game is so goood and cannot wait for the next one!
this has a really fantastic hook and is exactly my kind of thing. i was drawn into the concept immediately i hope to see more of this, but hopefully future entries (and hopefully a patch to this one!) can fix a few pressing QOL issues: 1. The camera - it works, the framing is nice, but it's often not clear where you can or can't go. Invisible walls that look walkable exist right next to actual walkable spots, meaning you sometimes need to just hug walls to figure out where you can go. And when you DO find a transition to a new camera angle, well: 1a. The movement between camera shots - a lot of games with fixed cameras let you keep moving the same direction through a shot transition by holding the same movement key down, even if the camera position means you'd now need to press a different directional key. Boreal Tenebrae does seem to have that, but it's imperfect or not enough - more than a few times I got caught between two shots because the character kept flipping the opposite dire...
There are 2 kind of reviews here pre and post June 7th. With the June Update every bug has been fixed! This game oozes visual style, very strange, baffling BUT intriguing story and characters, something not achieved very often. While still a traditional 3d-Point & Click adventure at heart, if you are into 'mystic-techno-horror', like David Lynch and a bit of Cronenberg movies or that kind of train in general, this game is for you!
“Boreal Tenebrae” is a surrealist horror adventure game where you play as Bree as she tries to find her sister Sarah how has vanished under mysterious circumstances. The setting is that of a small community trapped in a Junji Ito-esqe scenario where the whole town is covered in television static. Bree gains the ability to view the past from someone else’s perspective through DVDs. From there you piece together the story through these different events collecting items and solving inventory puzzles. The story of the game is fairly strong with good characters and great plot twists, unfortunately this game is just act one of the story and so ends with a to be continued. The main appeal of this game is most likely the visuals design, a large amount of video filters over very vivid colors and appealing character design, with great prerendered cut scenes. If you’re a fan of “Jack King Spooner’s” work you might like this game in not just the use of filters but also the use of vo...
