"Primal Threat" is a somewhat short metroidvania by a spare-time solo-dev starring two kids in a prehistoric scifi-setting. First things out of the way: It has definetly rough edges and a little jank, somehow I experienced frame drops (played on an old laptop, but it's still puzzling), some bosses have weird hit detection, the jumping can be a little stiff, the BGM switches sometimes unvoluntarily (I think) and the long hallways and pipes are littered with enemies (would there be a knockback on hit, like in the first Castlevania and the likes, it would be extremely tedious, but luckily you can just face-tank many things after some health upgrades). The nice things are that it has a Coop-Mode, the tracks are quite catchy, you completely heal while switching between levels (this can be a nice exploit for speedrunning and there even is a speedrunning mode), the interconnected map layout reminded me a little of "Hero Core" (a great classic by the way), the damage modifier based on the ...

About This Game
Story:
An ancient alien race is trying to destroy worlds and take their powers; Earth is next! Take on the role of Dean or Ellie, pick up your weapon and save your planet and possibly the galaxy!
Key Features:
-Explore an ancient labyrinth consisting of 7 interconnected zones
-Blast cyborg dinosaurs and other dangerous creatures with 6 different weapons (Primal Elements)
-Discover up to 10 upgrades to help defeat your enemies and reach new areas
-Fight alone or take a friend and play 2-player co-op
-Battle 11 challenging bosses
Developer Notes:
Local Multiplayer Notes: At least one controller is required to play 2-player co-op. This is due to both players cannot be controlled by one keyboard.
Overlay Notes: At this time, I am unable to get the Steam Overlay to work correctly at this time. I hope to fix this soon.
File Save Notes: While testing, I found that when I reopened the file 1 save, the file 2 and file 3 saves got erased (overwritten as needed games). So for now, I have removed file 2 and file 3 saves until I can get this fixed.
About Developer:
Hello, my name is Jordan and created Primal Threat in my spare time. I work at a grocery store, and I’m one of the managers, so I try to dedicate an hour or two each evening on my dream game. When my son Dean was born in July of 2020, my wife and I decided to decorate his room with a dinosaur theme and my imagination went wild with ideas for my next game. Dean and my niece Ellie are the two main characters in this adventure. I developed Primal Threat on my own, but my cousin Kristian created all the music.
My first game was Muzzleloaded. I believe it was a great learning project, but there were certain features that I couldn't create, which I was eventually able to implement in Primal Threat such as: A revealing map, multiple weapons to equip, local co-op, and multiple upgrades such as transforming into a tiny dinosaur!
Primal Threat is a short, but true Metroidvania where upgrades are necessary for overcoming bosses, enemies, and obstacles. The enemy designs are inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog enemies. The level design is highly inspired by Metroid and the shooting/weapon change mechanic by Axiom Verge.
The co-op mode is a throwback to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 where Tails gets to join Sonic on their epic adventure. It does make the game easier having a friend to help, but through playtesting it so far, it is a blast!
Primal Threat's hook is doing tremendous damage to enemies by shooting them with a weapon of complimentary color. There are 6 weapons for players to find throughout the world, each having a different color based on which zone it is found. Players who can correctly change weapons on the fly will be able to eliminate enemies quickly.
Thank you so much for your interest in my game!
Sincerely,
Jordan Keith
