About This Game
Overview
HopSquash! is a spiritual successor to the classic DOS game "Jump 'n Bump!" It's a simple little game for people of all ages to play together. Give a controller to a non-gamer friend and watch them get caught up in it! Just move and jump! Great for parties! And parents, you choose to have candy or confetti instead of blood, as this is a great game to play with the family too!
Never run out of controller options - Mix and choose; keyboard adds 2 players, mouse adds 1 player, gamepads can add one player each, or can be split to add 2 players each! No settings, just grab a controller, and start pressing buttons to join in!
(Permission was given by Andreas Brynervall, artist for Jump 'n Bump, to refer to HopSquash! as a spiritual successor to "Jump 'n Bump"!)
Features
Full gamepad support, and up to 8 players local multiplayer! Including split gamepad mode with 2 players per gamepad, so 2 gamepads means 4 players; 4 gamepads means 8 players!
Selectable animal characters, and 8 colours to customise them with
36 levels, with 6 themes (Meadows, Candy, Haunted House, Forest, Desert, Farm)
Each round takes place over 5 randomly selected levels before the final results are shown (round duration and number of rounds are configurable)
PARENTS! You can turn the blood off
If you'd like your kids to play (as has been requested several times) you can change the "Squash Mode" between Blood, Colours or Candy.
Legacy version
HopSquash! went through a major overhaul where it was moved from the Godot engine to the Unity Engine, and more features were added. But the "Level Editor" and some other minor features were dropped.
When you first start the game on Steam, you'll be asked to run HopSquash! (the current game) or HopSquash! Legacy.
Legacy version is missing a lot of improvements, has less levels, and many frustrating things about the old levels have been fixed in the new version which are not present here.
But the Legacy version contains a Level Editor, which didn't get ported across to the new version. NOTE: The Mac version doesn't support level editing in either version of the game.
The Legacy version is also compatible with 4:3 monitors and custom arcade cabinets. Custom arcades cabinets use an IPAC which lets you convert button presses into keyboard key signals. By default, this game allows for 2 players on the keyboard, but by editing the settings.conf file and setting "keyboard_only=true" will add 2 extra players on the keyboard, controlled by the keys YHGJ and P;L'. You can bind these keys in your IPAC settings to your joysticks and buttons, which will allow you 4 players on your home made arcade cabinets. (Not enabled by default because having 4 players on an actual keyboard is not only impractical but will hit the simultaneous key press limit on standard keyboards.)
What is Jump 'n Bump?
I love Jump 'n Bump, and I have recently thought that it's a shame it's locked away in its DOS form and is limited to only using 1 gamepad. And as good as that original level is, wouldn't it be cool if there were more levels? And more players possible? And a built in level editor so that pretty much anyone can get in and start making levels without having to learn Photoshop etc? So I set out to make an expanded version, going full time into game development.
This was to be called "Super Jump 'n Bump". I got in touch with one of the original creators, Andreas Brynervall (artist) and his only requirement for me to sell this commercially is to not use the original name or assets, and I can refer to the new game as a "spiritual successor". So now we have HopSquash!

This game is great! I loved Jump 'N Bump back on my older computers and this captures the feel of it perfectly! There was a great sense of community around the old game as well, people would create their own levels and share them online. So the inclusion of a level editor was a no-brainer. It's a simple level editor that's absolutely a breeze to use. I played around with it some and was able to create some simple levels in just minutes. I hope you can get steam workshop integration up soon! it'd be awesome to see everyone's levels :D I do have maybe a couple suggestions: 1. Since the Down button doesn't really do anything I don't quite see the point in having to push jump and down at the same time to go through a semi-solid platform (or whatever you call those.) It'd be a bit simpler if you just had to press down. 2. it'd be cool if in levels with no platforms at the bottom the characters would "loop" around to the top of the screen and keep falling (or maybe add some new mechanic to...
So far, pretty fun! I like the music, the art style, its great! My only complaint is the lack of online battles. I want to play locally, or match up with my friends via friend battle. Thats just my nitpick though. The AI is challenging so I don't mind too much.
Very fun game! I espexcially enjoy the family friendly blood explosion that appears when you jump on a character :)
Fan of the old jump n bump from the 90s. Used to sit there playing jump bump as we called it. As kids 4 of us on one keyboard those were the days . This is very similar. I really like this game. I certainly would like more levels but I guess maybe one day lol.
Simple but effective
Simple yet very fun game to trow in regularly amongst your game list at local multiplyayer parties. Fits right inn among Towerfall and Killer Queen Black!
This is a great spiritual successor for Jump'n'Bump, but HopSquash goes above and beyond what you want from this kind of game, highly recommended! It works with Xbox controllers, has bright, charming pixel art graphics and optional blood that can be turned off for those who need it. AI is decent enough to give you a challenge while you are learning the controls, and having multiple people against each other and AI is even better. If you have any issue with High DPI screens in HopSquash Legacy (the other is fine), just add the "-mx" command line option in Steam's launch options of this game.
While this game could do with more levels (or if the level editor could finally be added to the main version of the game and not just stuck with the Legacy version), its surprising how much fun this game is despite being pretty simple
This game is just adorable and fun! Even though I have to be honest, it took me a few minutes to figure out I can jump out of the ground in the main menu (so if you were struggling with the same, you are not alone!) :D But after this initial hurdle everything was just smooth. The gameplay is polished, art is retro-amazing and MUSIC is just absolutely insanely catchy. I disliked being in the water as it slowed down my overall fast gameplay, but other than that I don't have complains. I praise the different level designs and backgrounds and most importantly I praise the different animals!
