About This Game

The future of Rome is in your hands: what will your legacy be?

Take on the role of a young Legatus whose father was murdered by an unknown political opponent, forcing you to escape Rome and take refuge in the military campaign to subdue a Greek rebellion. Step by step, you increase your military prowess, strengthen yourself in the forge of combat, and become the Legatus everyone learns to both respect, and to fear.
In Expeditions: Rome, you exert the will of Rome through your actions across the world stage, from the bright blue coasts of Greece to the deep forests of Gaul. Decide how people will view you, and Rome. Will you strike with an iron fist, or speak with a silver tongue? Will you embrace the political heritage of the Republic, or carve your own path as you navigate the complex politics of the Roman Senate? Every choice matters as you decide the fate of your legion, your close companions, and of Rome itself.

  • Create your own Roman Legatus! Customize your character’s look, gender, class, and skills to match your playstyle and role-playing fantasy
  • Engage in tactical turn-based combat powered by an extensive skill-based action system where every weapon changes your potency on the battlefield
  • Adventure with 5 unique companions discovering their extensive backstories and unique personalities

I wish I had known about this game when it first came out. I finally heard it mentioned when watching a video about good turn-based strategy games, and I'm so glad I did. It has a nice mix of turn-based gameplay and top-level map strategy. And it also adds some nice random events and story lines, letting you decide the story and results. I recommend it for anyone that enjoys strategy games and turn-based.

Expeditions: Rome is a really enjoyable game, though it needed a few tweaks to be really polished. The story premise is simple: you're the child of a prominent patrician family during the late Roman Republic. Your dad gets whacked for sticking his nose in a whirlwind of corruption, so your mom packs you off to the army for your protection (as the military is a notoriously safe profession). Though you're expected to hold a sinecure position, your patron throws you into the deep end of warfare immediately. Along the way, you inevitably encounter the many larger-than-life figures of the late Republic: Marcus Aurelius Cotta, Lucius Licinius Lucullus, Marcus Porcius Cato, Marcus Tullius Cicero, Ambiorix, Dumnorix, Vercingetorix, Gnaeus Pompeius Maximus, Ptolemy XIII, Cleopatra VII, Mithridates VI, and a young up-and-comer by the name of Gaius Julius Caesar. Gameplay is delightfully varied between 4 principal modes. First, there is the tactical role-playing game mode whose most apt compari...

This game is essentially three things, turn based combat, dialogue/story, and a world map resource management with your legion. The turn based combat with your main characters is great, the story is ok, and the world map and legion stuff is basically an awful unskippable resource management time sink that will take up half the game. And unfortunately, the game does not have mods support or the ability to respec characters. So you can't skip the parts you don't like, and if you make a character build choice you don't like you're you have to restart (and waste hours) or you're stuck with it. So long as you're willing to slog through the garbage, this is actually a good game, and well worth the price. But if you're not patient about such things, you should skip this game.
