🎮
A strategic and narrative gem in The Witcher universe
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is an absolute gem for fans of the Witcher world. You play as Queen Meve, a fierce and charismatic leader, in a journey that blends emotional depth with tactical brilliance. Building your Gwent-style deck is a true pleasure: every upgrade, every synergy, every camp construction feels meaningful. Resource management is subtle and rewarding, and deck optimization becomes an art form. But what truly elevates the experience are the companions. Their stories, evolving loyalties, and reactions to your choices add remarkable depth. The maps are stunning, the illustrations are screenshot-worthy, and the writing is sharp and immersive. Narrative choices are masterfully woven into the gameplay — often heartbreaking, always impactful. They shape not only the story, but your party composition and the ending itself. 🕰️ Around 30 hours of deeply satisfying gameplay, with strong replay ...
Thronebreaker on the surface appears an awkward campaign to a deck building multiplayer card game. It's clearly what CDPR thought as the game is marketed as such. I do concede that the combat and deck building is awkward in areas, even in comparison to Witcher 3's Gwent. Your cards do indeed get stronger, but once you recognize the best strategy for your deck, there's very little reason to diverge from the best strategy, leading to battles feeling repetitive. Moreover, Thronebreaker feels the need to supplement the course of their game with "puzzle battles" where a specific solution must be found to beat a specific battle where your cards are predetermined. This is the absolute worst of Thronebreaker as neither your choices of deck building or of narrative matter in these puzzles. I mention choices of the narratives because it is the absolute best of Thronebreaker, and some of CDPR's best work in narrative storytelling the cast of characters is beyond impressive for a campaign to a ...
Thronebreaker packages the well-known card game Gwent from The Witcher 3 with an interesting adventure. The story is great, with lovely and interesting characters and decisions where you don't know if they have major consequences or are rather trivial after all. The art style, maps and cards are beautiful. And while potentially irritating, I personally found puzzles a welcome change in between the battles. Some fights and the endboss may feel unfair as well as unstatisfying, but the game gives you all the tools you need.
Addictive loop, kept staying on for 1 more match. Despite playing purely for the puzzles I ended up getting quite invested into the story and choices. Last boss felt like such a jump in difficulty from never losing to spending multiple hours and rebuilding decks. More choice and ease of switching decks would have been nice as it felt punishing resource-wise to try out new ideas.
Great story, Great Gwent Game, must Grab
yes
I found the gameplay of walking around to collect resources actually quite boring and unengaging. Still a huge fan of the Witcher world though, and will buy and play everything they release!
