About This Game

Pixelmash allows artists and game makers to craft pixel art and animations using a completely new technique, based on painting or importing an image in a high-resolution layer, while non-destructively pixelizing and applying other layer effects to create incredible pixel art. This makes several traditionally difficult pixel art tasks much easier:

 • Making outlines, shading, and dithering easily adjustable by having them applied non-destructively as layer effects.

 • Creating animations using layer transforms (rather than having to paint every frame pixel-by-pixel).

 • Easily creating different resolutions and color variants of the same image.

 • Converting photos or other hi-res artwork into pixel art using layer effects and the resolution slider.

 • And much more!

It's a brilliant new art tool for game makers, artists, hobbyists, kids, and lovers of the 8-bit and 16-bit era.

TLDR: If you are unsure, try the trial, just please don’t skip this software due to those top-voted 3 year old downvotes when the software is being continued to be updated with major versions by the developers. Now for the review: Definitely need to use this software more (have used it for more hours off of steam, but even so, my hours are small). I would wholeheartedly recommend it as a useful tool. It continues to be updated with some really interesting unique features, while already having a pretty much unmatched toolset from the start. The dynamic pixel art feature is an interesting spin on the pixel editor formula; how it works is the document is stored at a higher resolution (IE if you want to work at 32x32 pixels, the documents actual behind the scenes painting can be stored at 320x320 and so have the potential for 10x as much detail). Meaning that if you work with dynamic mode on, you don’t have to worry if you at some point decide to increase/decrease the resolution o...

07/31/2019
TLDR;

Crawling with bugs.
Super limited avenues of Support system. Could arguably say it's basically non-existent.
A lot of missing (sometimes basic) features that are expected to be in the program.
What's with the none-standard color palette file type? .pmp? Earth to devs, hello?
Disappointing. Could've been so much more. Could've had a significantly more powerful edge than the competition. If only the developer gave this software more love.
What update frequency? Pretty sure this product is close to being abandoned.
Pixel artists, STAY AWAY FROM THIS SOFTWARE.

Bugs

Layer clicking will rearrange itself randomly.
Peek-a-boo shortcut key viewing
Brush will disappear
Continuous right-clicking layers will crash the app (when you have more than 1 layer)
Faulty import image - It will import a black rectangle with some pixels in it sometimes.
...

Ehmmm, 25mb... The tool is fine, but the help is worse..... And the shade effect just 2 kinds now... The big problems is: The tutorial is absent....... The trail can't be accessed.....for China(You got that why) So, Just need much more built-in guide for me.
This is the most complex software (with a very good algorithm) for pixel art. Either if you need to pixelate pictures, to make sprites or animated gifs, Pixelmash has all the tools you need. Highly recommended for all pixel art aficionados. 10/10
Might not seem much, but the simple gif I made with Pixelmash for this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRVtxP31ILY - was just the right element to give it a cool vibe. I made the gif (Deadpool on a scooter) in 30-45 min in Pixelmash (also my first try with the software) from a jpg file.

Very cool concept! Also, very frustrating. Concepts are simple, yet this program works VERY VERY slow with my tablet and pen. Drawing is not smooth, the modes of drawing change constantly back and forth (free hand vs a point-to-point type line), and some times a line drawn is not registered at all. Undoing an action can take multiple clicks of CTRL Z when it should take one, and there is no Redo option as far as I can tell. Program crashes when you add too many layers or spend too much time drawing one object. Drawing one simple thing with a tablet pen can take hours due to all the bugs in the program. VERY VERY frustrating, because this program has so much to offer and shows so much potential.

I wonder why, and I say why, there are so many negative reviews on this product? All these reviews, please note, are for the early stage of the program. Now in 2022 it has grown up in features enormously, so it is wise to check the recent ones. This said, for the first time in my life (and I'm doing computer graphics from more than 20 years up today) using the main program tutorial on Youtube, the one in the help section of the program, in just half an hour I learned all the main features of a graphics software. And what graphics software. Pixelmash has a truly new approach to pixel art, introducing the dynamic resolution. This means you can paint in hires, add the effects you want from a wide selection, and then dynamically lower the resolution to obtain your pixel art. In practice, the program stores the data in hires, so you don't need to worry about detail loss when rotating an object and so on. Obviously the effects are cumulative and appliable at any resolution. Just about obje...

This pixel editor is quite awesome. The best part about it is the object based editing, that always keeps the original objects and only applies the pixelizing operations on the fly so that you can always operate on the original objects. The possibilities to animate simple objects is good. This software allows pixel-art-beginners to get easy and good results. Though the interface lacks some minor usability tweaks and hopefully there will be a bit more editing features. But overall a nice pixel-editor.

So far, so good! I like some of the nifty little things I can do with this pixel art program. I feel like if I got some practice with it, it could speed up some of the more laborious aspects of my workflow that I normally do with other programs. Some earlier reviews mention frequent crashes, I haven't experienced one yet so hopefully that means development has since patched a few things.
