Digimon Survive marks a bold and unconventional departure from the traditional monster-battling formula that fans of the Digimon franchise might expect. Developed by Hyde and published by Bandai Namco, the game blends visual novel storytelling with tactical RPG mechanics, creating an experience that is heavily narrative-driven, emotionally intense, and filled with difficult choices. While this hybrid structure might initially seem jarring—especially to those anticipating something closer to Digimon World or Cyber Sleuth—Digimon Survive ultimately succeeds in carving out its own unique identity, offering a darker, more mature take on the digital world and the bonds between humans and Digimon. The game opens with a familiar premise: a group of teenagers on a school trip find themselves mysteriously transported to an alternate world inhabited by strange creatures—Digimon. But rather than taking a light-hearted or purely adventurous tone, Digimon Survive plunges into psychological h...

1. Save scum simulator with abysmal rate of encounter/capture of specific digimon (esp. Palmon) to increase the pointless playtime of the game. 2. Replayability design is bad comparing to the other games, forcing you to go though the repeated storylines where the other games will have the "turn of event" chart representing the save point that the player can choose to complete the 'what-if' situations. 3. All alternative routes are determined by a single choke point representing the illusion of choices (meaning that the storylines after the choice is pretty much the same, but it will only majorly affect at one single point of the game). 4. The terrible mechanic that forces you to play a second playthrough in order to achieve a secret ending (by hard locking on the affectionated condition).
played like an hour of this back when my friend was visiting on his switch when it was released and it sat in my backlog ever since , boy am i glad i finished it . is it my fav digimon game? no , but its a damn good one highly recommend for fans of the series
Don't.
I am going to be honest. This entire game would have been really great if it was done as an anime series. Like I actually really enjoy the plot but the settings could have used more expansion not gonna lie. It does not work as a visual novel + game for me. The gameplay battle mechanics are just god awful, repetitive and boring. Visual novel is honestly a bit of a chore. If they made this into an anime series however, would gladly watch.
Tl;dr: This is not your typical Digimon Game, this is a Visual Novel with some very light SRPG Elements. However, the quality of the Visual Novel itself is really high (great CGs, good voice acting, good Digimon writing by modern standards). Give it a try if you like Visual Novels. Let me preface this by saying: "I am a very old Digimon fan". I played the OG Digimon World on PSX. Spent hundreds of hours grinding DNA Digivolution points on the weird dungeon crawly Digimon World 2. Got frustrated for dozens of hours on the slowness of Digimon World 3. Had a lot of fun with Digimon Card Battle. Weirded out by Digimon World 4 (where the digimons can equip weapons and such). Finished Digimon Data Squad and unlocked everything. Played Digimon Masters Online fervently for thousands of hours (I still miss my 5/5 Gallantmon BM, shame the publisher for the game is dead). If there's a Digimon game out there, chances are I played it (and I've finished it), so I'm very excited about Digimon Survi...
Good VN/TRPG hybrid with many memorable and heartfelt moments. I think it's also the most realistic portrayal when it comes to actual character size/dimensions in comparison to the animated series across the board. Having said that, the protagonist (Takuma) is a bit too mature for his own age and is a bit of an oddity in the cast, but he's still needed in order to progress the plot, which itself relies on a bit a contrived root justification to work in the first place, but that doesn't take away from all the positive bits. Yes, the TRPG portion is very bare bones and somewhat unbalanced; on one of the routes, you can easily die several times in a row even if you play on the lowest difficulty setting, because of the fact that end game enemies become very buffed all of a sudden, but it's still worth experimenting with, given the abundance of Digimons available, as well as the upgrades that you can use on each of them. Definitely a game worth experiencing even if you're not a Digimon fan,...
Definitely a must play game for Digimon fans who is into the lore of this world. Love the visuals, story, music and characters! I was just hoping I could play as the other chosen ones and get different dialogues xD Note: If you are not a fan of Visual Novels, then this game might not be for you.
Considering this is only the second Digimon game I've ever played, I'm really enjoying it. Good graphics, interactions between characters, along with some thrown-in spooky elements, but it's very fun! Although, I did kinda get jumpscared by Dokugumon.
