About This Game

Walk in the Footsteps of Legends in Imperator: Rome

Alexander. Hannibal. Caesar. These great men and dozens like them shaped the destiny of a continent. Mighty kings, clever generals and would-be gods made their mark on the ancient Mediterranean. Around this sea, close knit nations tested their mettle and virtue against each other in fierce combat, their cultural and political legacy now inseparable from what we understand as Western Civilization. But nothing was guaranteed. Can you change the course of history in Imperator: Rome?

Imperator: Rome is the newest grand strategy title from Paradox Development Studio. Set in the tumultuous centuries from Alexander’s Successor Empires in the East to the foundation of the Roman Empire, Imperator: Rome invites you to relive the pageantry and challenges of empire building in the classical era. Manage your population, keep an eye out for treachery, and keep faith with your gods.

Imperator: Rome’s features include:

  • Character Management: A living world of characters with varying skills and traits that will change over time. They will lead your nation, govern your provinces and command your armies and fleets. We also introduce our new, more human-like character art.
  • Diverse Populations: Citizens, freemen, tribesmen and slaves - each population with its own culture and religion. Whether they fill your armies, fill your coffers or fill your colonies, keep an eye on their happiness - your success depends on their satisfaction.
  • Battle Tactics: Choose your approach before battle to counter the stratagems of your foes.
  • Military Traditions: Each culture has a unique way of waging war. Romans and Celts have different options available to them. Unlock unique bonuses, abilities and units.
  • Different Government Types: Manage the senate in a Republic, hold your court together in a monarchy, answer to the clans in a tribal system.
  • Barbarians and Rebellions: Migrating barbarians may sack or settle your best land, while disloyal governors or generals can turn against you - taking their armies with them!
  • Trade: Goods provide bonuses to their home province. Will you take advantage of stockpiles for local strength or trade excess goods to spread the wealth around?
  • Provincial Improvement: Invest in buildings, roads and defences to make your kingdom stronger and richer.
  • Hellenistic World Flavor Pack: Special content designed for the Successor Kingdoms including new army models, new event chains and new art.
  • Digital Art Book: A collection of high resolution images from the development of Imperator: Rome with developer and artist insights.
  • Wallpaper: Easily accessible versions of the Imperator: Rome loading screens, so you can use them to decorate your own desktop.

This game really has one of the nicest maps of all paradox map painter games out there at this moment. What is a shame however is that Paradox dropped this project, it is one of my favourite paradox games if not my most favourite as I am a big Roman history fan. Recommended would be to buy this game on sale with the dlc's and to install the invictus mod from the steam workshop (unoffical mod expansion). The game has a mix of several paradox games: characters & building construction system from Crusader Kings 2 (which you will enjoy most for playing dictatorships or monarchy games), population and economy management system from Victoria 2 and a nation building, missions, army traditions and combat system from Europa Universalis 4 and lastly a new technology system and goverment management system specific for this game. This has also been the games biggest criticisms, as it confused fans of what this game actually is. Is it CK2? No. Is it Vic 2? No. Is it EU IV? yes, kind of but not ...

Pros: Control any ancient nation and do whatever you want with it Much freedom of what to do Interface is fairly easy once you learn it (however the tutorial doesn't fully explain this so I would recommend watching a youtube video to learn it.) Detailed map with hundreds of tribes- you can truly me ANY nation. Cons: Abandoned by devs and never gets updates All nations feel the same-after one playthrough you're kinda done. The entire research aspect of the game needs to be reworked (but it won't because the game was abandoned) changing government type takes forever (100+ years) fighting a major nation is a pain in the ass because they have like 20 legions, all with only about 2000 men and they just run around your armies and carpet siege cities so even though you are absolutely dominating in a war the other nation will still have more victory points because their small legions just siege a city and then run away i would highly recommend downloading the mod "invictus" as it essentially...

Abandoned too soon by Paradox - together with the Invictus mod, Imperator offers a GSG experience unlike most other Paradox titles, and especially if you are a fan of the time period, you can still have lots of fun with this game.

There's not a ton here since Paradox abandoned it, but it is fun especially if you like the time period and worth getting on sale.

truly a paradox gem, with the invictus mod installed. gone are the dlc paid add-ons and unecessary fluff and instead you get a straight up grand scale strategy game in its truest form with enough depth and complexity but not so much that you get overwhelmed.

I’m a huge fan of grand strategy games, but Imperator: Rome feels very unintuitive to me. The UI comes across like a cluster of buttons and stats thrown together without much thought for structure or clarity. You’re constantly presented with options and numbers, but rarely with a clear explanation of what they actually mean, what they affect in your empire, or what in turn affects them. Instead of feeling like I’m making informed strategic choices, I often feel like I’m guessing until I see what happens. Random side note is the population system. The concept of “POPs” might make sense on paper as a layer of abstraction, but in practice it feels like just one more thing to learn on top of everything else. Why not just count the population properly, rather than using another abstract metric? It makes me feel like I’m juggling systems that don’t need to be as abstract as they are. It’s the little things like this that throw me off. I find myself spending more time batt...
