About This Game

HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.

You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As a proud holder of the military readiness badge you know what your duty is: put on a non-functioning gas mask, load the vz. 52 pistol and protect the peace and your socialist homeland from the strange intruders.

  • The classic gameplay and vibe of romeric shooters from 1990s including a fitting brown retro aesthetic.

  • You'll find a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher and even some secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapon. If you run out of ammo, you might find the hammer and sickle coming in handy.

  • Handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details. Every level contains socialist paraphernalia which nowadays can only be found in museums or your grandma's attic (Eastern Bloc only).

  • Flushable toilets, destructible light bulbs and horses with gas/latex masks. In short, conservative values that never disappoint.

  • A custom engine written in Pascal imitating 1990s software-style rendering with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter.

I have no idea what HROT means, but given context clues my guess would be "brown" in czech. Jokes aside, this is an incredible boomer shooter. The mechanics feel good, it's not trying anything too crazy, but it does everything there with incredible competence. While the environments may be pretty monochromatic, they also elevate the texture and map design as a direct result. The game as a whole is weird and off putting, but it maintains an essence of pure charm through an impressive amount of doomcute. There are fun flourishes in this game from start to finish, and it kept surprising me through every single mission. 10/10

One of the most overrated boomer shooters I’ve played. I saw all the praise for HROT so I decided to give it a shot. I liked how it feels quake-like and hunting for secrets was well done but it was underwhelming in all other aspects. The whole game is BROWN. I get that its intentional to portray a brutalist alternate-history irradiated Czechoslovakia but that doesn’t make it easy on the eyes or enjoyable. It makes the levels blend together and they all start to feel the same in short order. Most enemies are bullet sponges and not a whole lot of enemy variety. I respect how some enemies are absolutely crazy and bizarre but most of the time you’re fighting the same enemy types over and over. Story is bare-bones and you’re left to decipher it on your own. I eventually reached a point towards the end of chapter 2 when I realized I was forcing myself to continue instead of enjoying the game so I put it aside for a bit. After some time off I came back and had the sa...

Definitely a must-play if you're into Boomer Shooters. Crazy atmospheric, and the super niche Czech Soviet Bloc humor may go miles over your head like it did mine but it adds to how bizarre and alien the setting is, really well done.

The game might look kinda dull at first but it's actually quite quirky and each level is nicely designed. I do think it was courageous to use this all brown color palette but it ends up complementing the setting of the game well. The Czech language makes the game look silly, but in an endearing way. The gameplay is neat as far as the mechanics an the general feel of it go. However, it can sometimes get repetitive with certain enemies not dying after being shot multiple times from some of the game's strongest weapons, and the game tends to send hordes of them at you in each level. Despite that, I would recommend the game very much. This review is heavily oriented towards criticising it, meaning I left out pretty much all of the praise it deserves, which you can see in other reviews.

Looks nice and might be a fun game, but sadly not on Steam Deck. The discription says it's playable, but 4 - 16 FPS ingame tell a different story. Also the gamepad controls feel weird and it's kinda hard to aim... (Had no problems with Boltgun or Prodeus) but maybe it's just the low FPS, idk. Refunded.
