Classic and timeless gem remastered with extreme attention to detail and huge amounts of new content. My only nitpicks: - individual wall pieces still don't connect nicely when built over uneven terrain - confusing DLC structure: some civs integrate into main game, some don't, etc. - xbox used as mod backend instead of Steam workshop

One of the few games that has only gotten better with age and each new version. Console version is stellar and the player base from the HD version can play alongside the modern player base just fine.

Every single update they make, they destroy even more the pathfinding. Last update was was supposed to fix it, and yes, most mele unit now move better, but now monks pathfinding got DESTROYED. Spanish Missionary is more noticeable, you can have 10 missionary converting a unit and if that unit retreat back, they trip over themselves and stop following the unit almost instantly, ceasing to convert. Microsoft FIX YOUR GAME.

im on windows 11 and I can't actually play the game. it worked fine on my windows 10 computer but it's not working on this one. first the game wouldn't start because it couldn't write files then I had to tweak the log folder so it could then the game starts and It crashes when I try to start any game. I deleted my save game folder to try and fix it and it's still crashing. I will update this reveiw if I actually get it to work. this game is a great RTS it's got a lot of variety and different strategies you can use. easily one of the best RTS ever. there's a rock paper siscors system in place to determine which units are strong against others.

It's great to see the development team prioritizing updates for PvE rather than PvP players. Although the latter may be more vocal in the community, the former constitutes the majority of the player base. This approach prevents the game from heading down the same misguided path as StarCraft 2. After all, most players prefer to enjoy matches against AI and complete single-player campaigns with friends—they are the true lifeblood of real-time strategy games.

Junk company that owns and operates this game. Lacks the passion for the game itself. Moderators/Devs would rather focus on sucking every dollar out of the community by trying to sell DLCs instead of fixing known problems: 1. Mis-match with ELO that is drastically better then others(matches where chances of winning statistically are below 5%). 2. Smurfing - Obvious insane level of smurfing where it's openly allowed and lack of policing. 3. Map Hack Cheats that are getting pretty obvious. 4. Lack of Transparency with moderation. I've been playing AOE2 on and off since 1999, this is the worse it's ever been in the sense of community and "fun" due to allowance on large issues that they simply lack in every aspect.

AI just stays in base. I've played multiple 2-4+ hour games and after a while of building up bases and armies all AI armies retreat to and only move in their own base. Even on harder difficulties. How is this a bug in a "Definitive Edition"?

True to the original while getting regular updates, DLC, and balancing patches, this is a wonderful game to play in 2025!

Whether you're an old fan of AOE2 or just getting started, Definitive Edition offers an enjoyable experience. The updated graphics take some getting used to when compared with the old versions, but they are well made. There's a lot of quality of life updates happening here. Great to play with friends, you'll probably enjoy it, buy it and try it!
