A standard setting creature collector rpg
Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch is a creature collection rpg set in a lore filled fantasy world. The game doesn't bring anything new and mindblowing on the table. Instead it focuses on refining the already familiar concepts. For example, the combat system overall is in my opinion the single most polished aspect of the game. It's mostly in real time, which in my opinion surpasses the usual turn based combat system in the genre. Once you get the hang of it, it's very intuitive and fair. One of the coolest things in the game is that they made a whole book with over 300 pages, which explains to the player how the world works without breaking the fourth wall. It really feels that the book is from the world. The foundation of the story reminds me a little of The Never Ending Story by Michael Ende. You play as a young boy named Oliver, who tragically loses his mother. This drives Oliver to isolate himself from the world. He is lost an...

the battle system is simply awful. the rest of the game is a recommend if you can deal with the jank
Honestly kinda generic and incredibly slow paced. I don't hate it I just think it's kinda mid.
The story is itself is so good and not gonna lie, I almost cry on first half of story. But the combat is the only downside. Even though I sneak attack on enemy, the enemy always attack first. What's the point of sneak attack then? You must progress the game for better equipments and items on store or you stuck on low level gears when grinding exp and gold.
Not only would I not recommend this game to other players, I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. Once you get the ship, the game is entirely unplayable. It doesn't help that glaciers move faster than the pacing of this one. Why couldn't they have just had Level-5 make Dark Cloud 3 like they wanted to instead of... this. The best part of the game is the Studio Ghibli graphics, which are unfortunately wasted on one of the worst JRPGs I've ever had the displeasure of playing. It takes over 30 hours to get to the ship, by which time it is way, way, way too late to get a refund. If you really want the familiars aspect, play Dragon Quest 5 which is MUCH better, or heck, even Dragon Quest 6's original version which is still decent. Or any of the Pokemons or Dragon Quest Monster games or almost any monster-familiar battling game. Avoid this one.
No. Combat is awful.
it's a perfect game for learning Japanese when playing.

I couldn't get past how horrible the Action combat with menu combat menu felt. The story looked like it would be a good one and the world building that was being set up looked intriguing, but there was no way I was going to be able to get past that combat system.
Kind of a tough one to recommend since the combat takes a while to get used to it and fast travel is unlocked fairly late, but I think it's worth it for the story and what combat evolves into as you get later into the game. Overall a very tidy game.
