Released roughly 10 years after System Shock 2, Bioshock (the 'shock' in the title is on purpose) is the spiritual successor to SS2. Beginning life as another sci-fi horror game set aboard a station, the game would eventually shift themes to an underground Nazi laboratory before settling on the Art Deco underwater motif. Which is quite a trip. From SS2's deep-space to the bottom of the ocean, this started as SS3 before settling on being a 'spiritual successor' with a new world altogether. Bioshock takes place in Rapture, an underwater, man-made city. It's guiding philosophy is best exemplified by a prominent banner the player sees at the very start: “No Gods or Kings. Only Man.' (a fantastically evocative phrase). on my replay when one of the big twists happened in the game one of my friends kept asking me if i understood everything while it was happening, this friend is very dear to me even though he thinks i am a 28 year old stupid person
Unplayable without a fuckton of googling and fixes to be a mediocre HL clone.
Bioshock 1 is one of the gaming legends of a few decades ago. A light immersive sim first person shooter with one of the best ambientations I've seen in a long while, Bioshock is in a lot of regards, a massively well thought out game. Both from the cultural landscape of the fictional city of rapture to the plotline and how it all connects together, all the parts related to the world building and story are honestly great and when looking in hindsight, it still looks like a masterpiece. Gameplay-wise is where things get a bit funky. The moment to moment gameplay is not nearly as interesting as the world building around Rapture. Weapons are varied and have their uses and that's honestly a huge plus and the many different plasmids -this game's special skills- offer many different playstyles. Shooting, using powers, hacking, using the environment to your advantage, the toolset the player has at their disposition is commendable. The problem comes with the design of the enemies and e...

Would you kindly play this masterpiece already? I'm sure coming into it now, a lot of what Bioshock did might seem oldhat, but this would be the OG. I do know which version to purchase at this point, but find the right one, and play Bioshock
