What starts off as a strong Ninja Gaiden-inspired action platformer turns into one of the most boring metrodvanias I've ever played. Terrible backtracking, boring maps, and tedious exploration plague the game upon the reveal of its 16-bit 'twist.' The shift from amazing to terrible pacing killed my momentum and had me hard drop the game.

Hands down the game with the worst, most annoying assholish characters with the utmost punchable faces and cheesy dialogs I've ever played in my life, ESPECIALLY the tiny red cunt that mocks you for literally trying to play the game. Alright, at first it's funny that you make fun of the player that dies to some spikey bullshit or something, but when you're presented with the same stupid smack-talking text each and every time you die, this just takes the fun away from the game. I can't even recall the last time when saw a character design this irritating as Quirble or whatever that one-eyed dickhead was called. No redeeming qualities at all - just pure pain in the ass, and it's regrettable that the devs haven't implemented the mechanic to beat the living shit out of him (yet). I bought The Messenger because Steam told me it was similar to Blasphemous, but now that I've read the writing and experienced the vibe of this game, comparing The Messenger to Blasphemous feels like comparing a c...

Didn't beat it, but its a solid game for its genre. The dev put tons of love and care into it.

Ok, so overall this is a great game, worth it at sale price for sure (I got for $3.99). Updated as of completing the game. Controls are tight and the platforming is good, I like the cloud step mechanic. My main gripe for an otherwise great game is just that the rope dart (grapple hook) ability is VERY finnicky about the end hit box and when/where it connects. That and the pull through to enemies can be a little inconsistent, so I end up taking damage guessing what adjustments I need to make movement wise because I don't know if it's going to pop me up over them, through them, etc. The character hitbox also seems to be a little janky with some sections when it comes to lasers/certain enemies. I also dislike the fact that I can't target attack directionally while standing/jumping, since there are several enemies that come at you from weird angles you can't fully/reliably counter projectiles from. The winged suit downwards attack is there but it feels like the rest should be possible to...

A masterpiece of a game. My only real complaint is that there's very few boss fights once the game goes non-linear. Still, what is here is a very fun platformer with lots of exploration to do. The soundtrack is also filled with bangers.

About 30% into the game, the game changes genres! I've never experience something like this.

I'm kinda like a ninja in real life, but instead of being stealthy by means of talent and years of training and dedication, people just ignore me because they don't like me.

The Messenger is a tightly controlled 2D platformer that also mysteriously feels haphazard in design at times. The highs and lows of the platforming and enemy design make for a very uneven experience, especially later in the game as the difficulty continually gets ramped up. That said, I do find the boss fights and well-designed platforming segments outweigh the tedium of repetitive collection by a notable amount. Gameplay wasn't as strong as I was hoping for, but this is a 120/10 story. I am also obsessed with the shopkeeper and her swag
