About the Game
“By blending real-time stealth with tried-and-true tactics gameplay, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden breaks exciting new ground for the turn-based strategy game.” - IGN
From a team including former designers of HITMAN and PAYDAY comes Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, a tactical game that combines the turn-based combat of XCOM with real-time stealth and exploration of a post-human world reclaimed by nature… and Mutants.
Of course the world ends.
It was just a question of time. Extreme climate change, global economic crisis, a lethal pandemic, and increasing tension between old and new superpowers. For the first time since 1945 nuclear weapons were used in armed conflict. Mushroom clouds rose from east to west before the dust settled.
Now it’s over and the Earth is still. Nature has invaded ruined cities. Wind sweeps through empty streets, turned into graveyards.
The humans are all gone. Scavenging through the remains of civilization are the Mutants, deformed humanoids and animals alike, searching for salvation or just something to eat. To survive, you and your companions must venture out to explore the Zone.
Maybe one day you will find the Eden of legends, the ancients’ haven in the middle of hell. That’s where truth awaits, the stories say. Maybe you will find your answers there.
Then again, maybe it’s all bullshit.
TACTICAL COMBAT
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the ultimate fix for your tactical strategy addiction. Dive into a deep, turn-based, tactical combat system inspired by the XCOM games.
EXPLORE A POST-HUMAN EARTH
Journey through a post-human world of abandoned cities, crumbling highways, and overgrown countryside. Check back at the Ark, a neon-bathed oasis of ill repute and questionable characters, to restock your supplies and plan out your next adventure.
CONTROL A TEAM OF MUTANTS
A duck with an attitude problem and a boar with anger issues; these aren’t your typical heroes. Get to know Dux, Bormin, Selma, and many other characters each with their own unique personality and deranged perspective on the world and their situation.
MASTER THE STEALTHY APPROACH
Sneak through shadows to avoid conflict or to catch enemies unaware. Real-time stealth allows you full control of approach: sneak into an enemy camp, position the team of Mutants to your advantage, and gain the element of surprise.
UNLOCK MUTATIONS
Unlock new mutations and abilities for your Mutants, such as Selma’s grasping vines, Bormin’s Charge, and Dux‘ uncanny ability to sneak into a camp full of enemies unnoticed, despite being a 4-foot tall walking, talking duck with a crossbow.
DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT
Use the environment to your advantage. Stay out of floodlights, hide from line of sight, or just blast down fully destructible walls and buildings and wreak utter havoc.
LOOT, LOOT EVERYWHERE
From makeshift slingshots to high-powered rifles and top hats to police vests, make sure you equip your Mutants for the dangers ahead. Nothing says post-human quite like a mutated boar in spiked metal armor charging at you with a blunderbuss in his hands.

User Reviews
Tight, crisp, well written and a must-play for a solid 20 hr turn-based adventure. Loved the characters, writing and good challenge. Normal difficulty is a very solid challenge. If I could give some feedback, once you understand the OP power of the knockback charge [bormin], 90% of fights become a 'knockback + stealth kill' loop that does wear after a while. But it knows when to end and for the money - very worth it. well done devs!
Interesting take on a tactical shooter. Lots of ways to tactical encounters. Worth it especially on sale
It is a fun game, but it is limited in actions and very short. I would only recommend this game if it were under $20. graphics are nice and a fun story line, however, it just abruptly stops at points. I beat the game in 14.6 hours with probably a quarter of those being afk.
This game was a total slog. Half the upgrades were pointless because as soon as you get +1 damage every enemy has +1 armor. Combat was really repetitive and required using a bored stealth system.
Some people wan't a casual game play experience when they pick a causal game mode. 8 enemies in the first part of the game with one med kit each character. I have tried probably 10 times at least. I give up. Seems like a fun game but if you are a casual gamer this will enrage you to no end.
Very fun tactical RPG
I love this weird little thing. The highly innacurate descriptions of pre-apocalypse items are hilarious and by far my favorite aspect of the game. The tin foil hat was worn by highly-regarded "free thinkers." The defibrillator displays a reclining human, meaning it is a relaxation device. A barbie doll is described as a totem of the "Hunger Goddess." I think different people will react differently to the tactical mechanics, and the game is quite hard on most difficulties. I may come back and play on a harder one, which isn't common. I like the weird animal mutants. I like the unusual tactical stealth mechanics, which allow you to pick off enemies silently before engaging larger groups. It's a weird little gem, but a gem I believe it to be.
All-in-all a solid XCOM clone, especially considering it's from a smaller studio. While the game competently implements the XCOM formula it also mixes it up with ideas of its own, like seamless real-time/turn-based switching, stealth take-downs and some light RPG elements. The Mutant universe is a great setting for a game like this. It's fun and rich with lore. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic Sweden and Swedish players will notice references to real-world places and brands. The game can be quite challenging, as is tradition with these types of games (or maybe I just suck lol). The play style is a little different from other XCOM clones, so you may need to unlearn some goto tactics. I played on Steam Deck and the game ran fine out-of-the-box, but reducing framerate and some of the graphical settings improves battery life. Annoyingly, the game did crash on me a couple of times throughout my playthrough.
It's an anthro version of Xcom. There's a heavy need for stealth and strategic planning before entering combat. The game is super fun and mildly replayable. The only issue I might have with it is how easy the game is. Even on very hard mode, if you know the game mechanics well, the game is very easy. But that's a minor gripe, because I took the time to learn the game and make use of every single advantage. Super fun game! I wish more games were like this.
