It's a great idea for software, painting software plus some light rpg elements/collectibles and the social aspect but the painting tools are just too basic. I'm not disputing that you could produce really good looking art with them but they are about at the level of AMX Art that I had back in 1985 on the Amstrad CPC 464. Reply to dev, re: new tools: It's not so much new tools that I would like, but the existing tools working differently. At the moment for example the round and square brushes are really, really basic. I mean all they do is draw a square or a circle in full on colour of the current ink. I get that they are supposed to be oil not watercolour so I shouldn't expect fading at the edges or the start of a stroke or transparency such that painting an area then painting over it makes the part that received two strokes have a bolder colour but you need SOMETHING to make it more nuanced, I mean you are literally just blitting a one colour square or rectangle to the screen- it's ...

Sit back and relax as you relish in your training days from days past of Mario Paint and Microsoft Paint. This game is essentially the idea of having an online community with a paint program. You can buy, sell, rate, or just observe art. There are plenty of colors to choose from and even if you don't consider yourself artistic (much like myself) you will find enjoyment out of this game for it's simplistic and relaxing pleasures. Is it worth the asking price? I didn't think it was, but this is something I can sit down and imagine myself easily getting 10 hours out of or more. Having a dollar per hour of entertainment for the bare minimal amount of entertainment I will most likely get out of this game is more than fair enough. If you are on the fence, wait for a sale. This game is a great and innovative experience I didn't think I would be into, but was proved wrong pretty quickly. Drawing and painting are some of my favorite hobbies. Like most people, I do not have any of my art hanging in a gallery somewhere, but I like the idea of getting at least some of my work out there. This game allows me to do that. Like any new medium, it may take some practice, but it is a fun and easy game that allows you to actually get your work seen by others in the community. I have been playing the game since alpha and was really excited for it to go on sale. Whether you like to doodle or are a serious artist, I think this game has something to offer.
I've been playing The Painter's Playground since the beta version and bought it immediately when it was released. The first time I sat down to play, I got sucked in and played for over an hour and a half. I'm not really an artist but I have so much fun playing around with different tools and colors, and love looking at all of the amazing art people create. It's a really cool concept to be able to relive the old MS Paint days in an interactive/competitive way. Besides the cool concept of the game, the art is gorgeous. The oil paintings are beautiful and the music is inspiring. It's really original and REALLY fun.
Calming, relaxing, yet always interesting and stimulating. Manage your collection, expand your toolset, paint and sketch to earn renown, paint and sketch for fun. Browse the waterfront market for an underpriced masterpiece, or simply spend an afternoon at the community gallery. Yep, you can even just jump in for 10 minutes and paint the daily challenge. There's always something to do. Even if you're really not that good at painting (me), highly recommended! 9/10
This is not a game. It's a way of life. If you like painting or drawing then this is for you. You'll spend your time creating art and sharing it with the community. Players can view and 'like' art created by others, as well as being able to sell your art and buy masterpieces that have been created by others. You can also take part in daily challenges that task you with creating a painting based on a specific topic or word. People with some real-life artistic talent may be discouraged by their results when working with a mouse instead of a real brush or pencil, but with practice and patience you can create some stunning artwork. Optionally, you can also purchase pen-style mice designed for artists. The UI is easy to navigate and understand, and the music is soothing. It plays like an RPG version of an old Microsoft Paint program, trying to simulate real painting, without the bells & whistles of programs like Photoshop. There is no 'undo' button in real life. There IS an 'undo' featur...
This is a neat game where you can paint, slowly unlocking more tools to create stuff and share to others. If you like playing around in MS paint, games where you level or unlock stuff as you progess, or trading art online then you might like this game. EDIT: My main gaming rig is on SteamOS not windows. I had to switch to an older computer I hadn't used in a while to play this. The dev reached out to help me with a technical issue I had. I had acess to a beta version of this game but ended up buying release version of the game.
I am not a very artistic person, but I love The Painter's Playground! Really cool idea for a game and fun to play. I like that you can play two ways, by creating beautiful paintings (if you're talented, unlike me) or by purchasing paintings for your collection and acting as an art curator. The developers are awesome and highly invested in making this game fun. I had the pleasure of beta-testing it which was an outstanding experience. Well worth the price too!
So, it doesn't work well with my seldom-used graphics tablet, but that's not really the point of this game at all anyways. It's really about working with limited tools to make something you're still happy to call your own. I'd say it's worth your time, if you ever wanted to dabble with drawing/painting, especially with the daily challenge mode to give you ideas and more limits to play with.
This game is awesome! I really am not much of a painter but The Painter's Playground has made it easy for me to give it a try. One of my favorite aspects of the game is the Challenge of the Day. I really like that people can interpret the daily challenge however they like and share their interpretations with the community. I find this game especially pleasant when I need to take a break to relax. The whole game has a neat art vibe and I would recommend it to both artists and amateurs!
