About This Game

The year is 1997. You used to be a hacker, but now you have the phage. You made a deal: one hack, one dose. There’s nothing left to lose… except your life.

EXAPUNKS is the latest open-ended puzzle game from Zachtronics, the creators of Opus Magnum, SHENZHEN I/O, TIS-100, and more.

  • READ ZINES - Learn to hack from TRASH WORLD NEWS, the underground computer magazine. Tutorials, hacking tips, secret information, searing commentary— TRASH WORLD NEWS has you covered.
  • WRITE VIRUSES - Program your EXAs (EXecution Agents) to tear through networks, replicate themselves, trash files, terminate other EXAs— and leave without a trace.
  • HACK EVERYTHING - Hack banks, universities, factories, TV stations, highway signs, game consoles, the government... oh yeah, and your own body.
  • SLACK OFF - Play ПАСЬЯНС, if you hack the server where it’s stored. Or play HACK*MATCH, if you hack the region lock on your Sawayama WonderDisc. Or create your own homebrew games for the TEC Redshift… if you hack the development kit.
  • TAKE DOWN YOUR FRIENDS - Compete with your friends by running your programs directly against theirs in all-out hacker battles. Make every cycle count.
  • CREATE YOUR OWN PUZZLES - Create your own networks to hack, and share them with the world on Steam Workshop.

If EXA PUNKS sounds fun to you, it probably will be. It executes everything it try's to do very well. Each level is unique, and there are always multiple ways to solve. The difficulty curve is really good, it starts quite easy and ramps up at a really good pace so that your skill improves at a similar rate to the difficulty. There are a lot of little details that make this game extra special: - It's never just "change these numbers around" it's instead, "rob this bank" or "change the highway road signs letters". - little non-coding mini games thrown in throughout because why not? - printable magazine that is from game world for immersion (and code reference) - cute story that while not too crazy gives meaning for the projects - ability to make your own games using game system - optional pvp coding arena battles (idrk how to explain this lol) And lot more little stuff that you would't expect, that adds to the whole thing.

So far liking this game a lot more than Zachtronics' Shenzhen I/O which is structured very similarly. I love the world building and the zines (which I've printed out and had fun cutting and assembling) and the references to San Francisco and the Bay Area are cool. The puzzles are challenging but not overly daunting, and the visualizer and interactivity elements when you're testing make solutions so easy to debug. I'm just thoroughly impressed at the polish of this game, and I love the soft modern art style. Sad Zachtronics studio has closed up but there's a huge library of their other games I'm looking forward to working through.

This game is incredible, if you like programming or logic puzzles this one is a must have. One of my favorites out of the zachtronics games.

This is by far the easiest of Zachtronics's assembly-ish programming games and I say that entirely because of the generous line limitations. On the other hand, the complexity of the algorithms it demands is also much higher than other games--including the dreaded sorting algorithm. Highly recommended.

I really like exapunks. It is very satisfying to send a horde of exas into a network to do my bidding. The game is well designed so the challenge sounds complicated, but then using a limited instruction set I sort it out. Then I am pleasantly surprised that all the complex processes going on in the network were designed by me.
