I bought this game when it came out. This is the kind of game that I was hoping Cyberpunk 2077 was going to be like.

July 2011: a young, dumb, and naive high school gamer sees Deus Ex, unaware of the imminent prequel being released the following month, on sale alongside its sequel. This was still in the early days of having my own personal Steam account, so naturally my wallet (or whoever's wallet I was using) couldn't resist adding another game into my library. Despite seeing teh critical acclaim and the label of GOTY, Deus Ex didn't click for me. The stealth was too rudimentary after experiencing games from the Splinter Cell series, and the gunplay was aggravating in its use of skill points to determine how accurate weapons will perform. After a few days of trying to enjoy this game, I only made it to Hell's Kitchen where I found a spot to save and resume back “soon.” That's when Steam Summer Sale had kicked off, Portal 2 was on sale, and this game left my consciousness (in a body bag). Fast forward to the present, in a effort to quit whining about having a huge backlog of games to play...
There is NOTHING BAD to say about this game; it's a superior CLASSIC by Warren Spector. If you haven't played this game then there is truly something wrong. I played this the year it came out and it even stands up to today and the future. I'm playing on an HP Z4 9940X 3.3GHz in Manjaro Linux with 64GB RAM and using a 3060 RTX with 12GB and it runs so smooth it's not even funny. I finished this game YEARS ago and saw the $1.99 price tag and HAD to have it once again. DO NOT miss out on this amazing game. It's VERY LONG and the world in which you play in makes you think twice about so much the future has to offer; even in REAL LIFE.
goated, do yourself a favor and play ASAP
This is the best singleplayer game ever made no question. Electrocute terrorists. Hack public ATMs. Discover your fed brother's goon cave. Pick locks with a rocket launcher. Pepper spray cyborgs. Crawl in vents that are 1 meter tall for some reason. Put skill points into swimming. Visit a bar in Hong Kong and call the bartender a communist. Beat globalists to death with a crowbar and stop a global conspiracy. DEUS EX! I give this game a rating of GEP GUN.

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition remains one of the most ambitious and genre-defining titles in video game history, even decades after its original release in 2000. Developed by Ion Storm and spearheaded by Warren Spector, the game is a complex blend of first-person shooter mechanics, role-playing depth, and immersive sim design philosophy. It invites players into a dark and gritty cyberpunk world rife with conspiracy, societal collapse, and transhumanist themes—all of which are remarkably prescient. Despite the passage of time and the evolution of technology, Deus Ex's design principles continue to influence modern gaming, and its vision of player agency and narrative complexity remains nearly unmatched. Set in a dystopian future ravaged by a deadly virus and controlled by shadowy elites, Deus Ex places players in the role of JC Denton, a nano-augmented agent for the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO). The plot unfolds slowly, but with extraordinary depth, gradually ...
So I am reviewingy first gameplay when Deus Ex was first released. I don't know how it holds up today, but I had no notion of how much freedom I had in the game. Because of it being designed like a sim, my 12 year old brain just played and played until I finished. And 30 years later, the experience has stuck with me. My middle aged brain would maybe find the 90s jank a bit much for a replay, but Deus Ex is the stuff of legends, an FPS action Sim RPG (any other genres?) with a mature (for the time?) story covering all manner of technology and political topics that we still talk about today.
My favorite game of all time!
