A nice throwback for those of you who remember the frustrating yet fun action and exploration platformers of the 8 and 16-bit era. Controls are not 'clunky' but actions require a bit of forethought to avoid walking into idiocy. Nice atmospheric tones and ye olde robotic voice samples. Those with complaints of sprite-quality need to understand they dev is going for the 'early' 16-bit era look, which sums up much of the MSX2 catalogue. Worth a look at $8, currently on sale (until 5th of Jan) for less than what I found under my desk drawer. Play on MSX User difficulty to relive the time of "scream obscenities at yourself for nearly wiping out, manage to scroll through the section on a sliver of shield."

About This Game
Genre: Metroidvania (2D Metroid/Castlevania style) with RPG elements.
Explore, investigate, find improvements for your suit, find weapons, upgrade your weapons in workshops, fight incredible mutants...
Discover what happened in the first martian colony.

Story:
Earth has lost contact with the only colony in mars; a scientific colony established to research the existence of life in the frozen waters of Mars.
You will be sent to the planet’s surface with the mission to restore contact with the colony and find out what happened.
Inspired in the 80’s and 90’s sci-fi horror movies, Life on Mars is an old-school game with old school graphics and very addictive playability which will make you feel again the things you only felt 2 or 3 decades ago.
Features:
-4 difficulty levels:
The easier modes can be enjoyed as a “run and gun” kind of game, while the normal and mostly, the hardest level, will make you play it as a real survival game, where every hit counts.
-Weapons and abilities:
You will start with a single rifle, but you will be able to find weapons such as a grenade launcher, a flame thrower, a machine gun and plastic explosives.
There are also abilities for your suit, such as the double jump and the run ability.
-Shield and energy improvements:
You will find modules to extend your maximum amount of shield or your maximum amount energy for your weapons and abilities.
-Energy system:
Instead of an ammunition system, the game uses an energy bar system which decreases with every weapon or ability you use, but it recharges automatically over time.
-Energy cells and workshops:

You will find energy cells around the map or after defeating enemies. You can use those energy cells in workshops scattered all over the colony to upgrade some weapons or your energy generator, so your energy bar reloads faster.
You can also farm for energy cells by revisiting previous areas for as long as you wish.
There is no limit on the upgrade system, so you can end up with incredibly powerful weapons, so no matter how difficult the game gets for you, you can farm and upgrade your weapons to the point where you have no rival.
-Map:

You have a basic map of the colony which shows your location. You can use it to find secret areas in the colony.
-Non linear game style:
You can re-visit any area of the colony and use your new weapons and abilities to access rooms or areas you could not before, so you might find power ups or weapons.
Also, further on the game you can do several objectives in any order you like.
-Explosions:

Who doesn’t like explosions? There are LOTS of explosions!
A big part of the addictive playability is due to the fact that there is a very elaborate combo system with the explosions, chain reactions, friendly fire, etc.
It is really advised for the player to master the explosions dynamics early in the game to make use of them efficiently and improve the game experience.
Welcome back to the past, when you really had fun with videogames.
Welcome to Mars…

Not feeling this one, unfortunately. It controls poorly (too floaty) in my opinion and seems to be lacking polish . Map is nothing like in other Metroidvanias (which might be fine for you, just not for me). The game seems to be liked by plenty of people, but if you got into Metroidvanias thanks to Axiom Verge (like me) or the original Metroid this one probably won't 'grab' you.
Going to give this game a 8/10! Do you like MetroidVania? Try this one. Considering it is a indie game, there goes my analysis. Level Graphics 10/10 - Really, really cool and immersive. Sprite Graphics 6/10 - Could be better, both visuals and movement. Gameplay 9/10 - Controls are fluid and responsive, but you can't aim your gun down. Music 10/10 - Immersive, scaring and fits perfectly! Sound effetcs 4/10 - Really poor, gun shots sound like bublegum bursting General level and game concept 10/10 - You really feel on space! Game is mostly good, an old school feeling and some bits of good humor. The only really bad thing about this game is the map, it's almost useless, not functional as in Metroid or Castlevania. Gives you no hint about where you really are. PS: DAMN MUTANT CHICKENS!
It tries to be like a remake of the MSX2 version, but I do have quite a few problems... 1. Controls. For whatever reason, I can only bind the four face buttons, and start is by default the pause button. That makes it awkward to use Grenade or Flamethrower (whichever you put on the Y/Triangle button) 2. Obviously stolen assets. Somehow the MSX one got away with Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission tiles, but this one had Drachoras as an enemy, downscaled in such a way that they are not as distinguishable but still anyone savvy enough can tell, and Mega Man X capsules. 3. Too many enemy cheap shots. They are either in a blind spot offscreen when you are going down, or they can snipe you midair for HUGE CHUNKS OF DAMAGE, or they are tanky and makes Touhou look like a child's game. 4. The grind is too intense. Went on for an hour and a half of farming credits to upgrade the rifle and energy... And it's painful. And the huge bipedal mechs stills floors me. Must I say I'm close to endgame and the...
Quailty game, the mechanics are fluid, the controls are tight and it looks great. Almost everything you'd want in a metroidvania game is here. The difficulty curve is quite steep but not unforgiving.
"Life on Mars" is a Metroidvania for Sega Genesis and turned into PC game. I like the mechanics, storyline, and I enjoy the mix of genres (ex. Metroid, Castlevania, Resident Evil, Faxanadu). The grinding is... very SEGA/NES, so treasure rooms and lockers rooms with upgrades would make more sense than making the game grinding by killing monsters. It only makes sense to get battery/cells/enery-packs from robots. I do like the background visual parallax. I would like more the voices to narrate what is going on and to repeat if necessary, because I missed the conversations at the bottom of the screen while killing monsters. I do like revive/teleport feature, making it feel like our hero is using supertech. Again. Treasures and using the Upgrade Centers would help reduce the grinding and encourage exploration. I still think they need to make the room designs bigger, ergonomic (ex. SEGA Castlevania Bloodlines allows Belmont to jump unto stairs; thus, making the platforming feel more rea...
Played for about 80 minutes on here but I've put a few playthroughs on the Mobile version. Controls: On Point Graphics: On Point (If you're into the Old School style) Difficulty: Can be hard, which is good. However there is no limit to your upgrades, thus you can farm forever till you upgraded enough to 1 shot everything. This isn't on the Dev tho. I suggest only capping at 40 on MSX difficulty to get a good baseline. Secondary note: You don't get a tutorial. This is good. No hand holding. Overall: A Play and shelf later game due to how short it is and with no real replayability (Everything happens the same way regardless of playthrough. Grab the upgrades in order, blow up the reactor, run to ship. Now, don't get me wrong, it can take you a while if you're being overly cautious. But once you beat the game once, assuming your memory is good, you'll know where to go and what to do with minimal effort. My only gripes and suggestions are 1: Way too short. 2: Needs more upgrades. 3: W...
Simply love it! I am really looking forward to playing the sequel!
This was a short little game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Reminds me a lot of environmental station alpha. Though I will say simply do not try and obtain 100% of the achievements in this game it requires around 4 playtrhoughs if not more to be possible.
If you like Metroidvania style games, then you'll love this one. It combines retro style with fast paced animations, explosions and big enemies. Also, the adventure keeps you going on, and you'll have to explore to advance, discovering hidden places and finding the exit to the next level. The controls are easy and the difficulty is well balanced. Graphics are good, and the music keeps you in the game. Also, some grins to the MSX are there, so if you happen to be an MSX fan you'll be delighted. Oh! And don't forget there is a real MSX version of the game! A really nice game and very recommended if you like this genere. Congratulations to Kai! Salut!
