I have been a wargamer since the late 60's--yeah, old guy here... I have learned over the years that simplicity and ease of play typically triumph over details, details, and more details. Now, don't get me wrong--deep dive simulations can be very enjoyable. It is easy, however, to lose yourself in the thicket while the world passes you by. This game is easy to pick up and easy to play. There are no supply rules to worry about. There are no cohesion points to finagle. In short, this is wargaming at its most primitive. And...for some odd reason, it works! Perhaps it's the ferocius AI or maybe it's the simplicity. Regardless, as the German player you feel the desperation as the Soviet hordes slowly grind you into dust. They maneuver smartly, they attack smartly...as I said, ferocious AI. Now, this game does have its problems. The manual is basically non-existent. You have to figure a lot of things out on your own. Stick with it though, and you'll soon be telling your wife...

About This Game

January 1944. The German Army had their last toehold on the Dneiper River. This salient projected between two powerful Soviet army groups, the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts. Though weakened in their previous efforts against the Germans, on January 25th and 26th, these two powerful groups attacked and surrounded two German corps.
The Germans responded quickly to this threat, hurrying reinforcements from other sectors. Their relief drive made good initial progress, but stalled in the face of stiff Soviet resistance and both sides antagonist, "General Mud". In the end, the trapped Germans made a desperate breakout attempt from the pocket. Less than half of the encircled forces escaped the trap, with none of their heavy weapons or equipment.
Battle For Korsun is a simulation of these battles in January and February 1944. Players control the various German and Soviet forces which took part in these struggles. The Soviet player must coordinate the offensives of his Fronts to encircle the Germans quickly before the Germans powerful reinforcements arrive. The German player must form a pocket perimeter, then orchestrate his relief drive with his Panzer divisions to rescue their trapped comrades

Bought this game in the hope of a light version of Panzer Corps/Panzer General/Order of battle style game. I knew the rules was light. But I had technical issues: 1) Three crashes to desktop in less than one hour. 2) Unit markers out of place with attack markers on lone hexes at one place. Nothing I could change. 3) Very slow UI when selecting units 4) Not easy to deselect unit. You have to click on another unit for doing so 5) No loss report after battle. Must I count the strength points manually for all units involved to keep track of the losses ? 6) No loss summary screen so no reason to replay the scenario to gain a better outcome 7) No victory hexes at all which means your actual placement at the map is irrelevant. Combine that with the lack of supply and you don´t have any reason to protect any area on the map at all. Just keep your units together and try to inflict as much loss as possible with no regard to actual strategic or tactical objectives. No, sorry this game ha...
This is the sort of game I like. However there are some problems with the implementation. The manual doesn't explain the game well enough. For example - rough terrain gives a defensive bonus. But what is rough terrain? There are various types of terrain on the map but no mention that I could find of what each type represents? It seemed swamp and forest - are those rough? The counters have numbers and there are examples given in manual of what the numbers represent but it seems it hasn't been proofread. For example a 12-8-10 panther battalion has 12 attack v armor, 8 attk v inf, 8 movement. What does the 10 on the counter represent? I suppose it's actually 10 movement but I'd rather not have to guess. The rules are quite brief which is good, but also bad because it's hard to get a sense for how things work. For example there is a chance for attacker to select a hex to fire at but when the game turn executes it seems this choice is not offered to the player. There is also mention of a...
Too many bugs at its current version, rule book is a joke (no real wargamer would dare to write this short content-less rulebook), seems they just try to make small money by underdevelloped game. That is a shame because the Korsun Pocket situation is relly interesting.....
Nice map and tactically interesting to play. Unfortunately I have not been able to finish a game due to crashes. Manual too brief to know why certain actions can / cannot be done. If the technical problems are solved then I would recommend it.
Bad, bad, bad. Bug after bug. Running vanilla Win10 on a dedicated gaming machine. Stacked unit selection works intermittantly, game crashes mid turn, unit moves with either right mouse or left mouse button, numerous wanted to look at units using right click but somehow magically move previous viewed unit. Right click stack examination often leaves unit graphic fully stretched and will not go back to a single stack graphic. This game has been out for how long?!? Slitherine/matrix sure didn't beta this before taking on this and the other Yobo russian game - not a good sign on QA folks! Will be looking to get a refund immediately. Player of war games for 20+ years....
For fans of turn-based strategies, despite the inflated price for our region. Buy at discounts and enjoy. Rating - will last for a few days: (7.5 out of 10) Pros: ✅Quite a nice visual component. ✅Ability to play with a friend. ✅Fast entry threshold. ✅There is a small manual. ✅There is localization into different languages. Minuses: ❌Frequent crashes. ❌Relatively high price for such a project. ❌The game is very simple and there is no supply or number of troops (soldiers/equipment) in a combat unit. The note: ⚡The game at the beginning seems very simple, but the more moves there are, the more interesting it is to play because the Wehrmacht and the Red Army receive reinforcements from different sides, which sometimes changes the course of the battle. In 5 playthroughs, I never had a scenario repeat itself.
What I love the most about this game is it’s simplicity, it reminds me of the old Avalon Hill board game “Blitzkreig”! This game has so much potential and I love playing it - when it’s working - that is. Constant crashes have ended my playing it, I’m hoping some fixes come out and soon. The manual could also use some work. Half the time I have no idea what’s going on. If the improvements are made I would purchase the add ons in a minute.
Simple small game, You get what you pay for.
I would not recommend this game to anyone. It feels like an incomplete game. It is full of bugs, so bad to the point that you cannot even complete a playthrough of the game. I'm calling out Steam for even letting things like this be here in the first place, this is just a scam taking money from people. It feels like a fledgling first time game designer through something out, and it was incomplete and he has not gone back and kept up with updates nor debugging. Waste of money, DO NOT BUY. I was looking for a WWII game that had some ease of play to it, something where you don't have to have a degree to get into it (like HOI4), just a good old battle of a well known action. But it is not this game.
