GOKEN
GOKEN has just come out of EA & is a 2D style RPG hack & slash, action adventure game. The game is very pretty, I was rather impressed with this games art style, " this is not some cheap RPG maker game". I found the Art style quite unique & very pretty at times. I really enjoyed every moment I was playing this game, & it was hard for me to stop playing. REMEMBER to manually SAVE the game ALOT, as game does NOT auto save, its easy enough to find via start button/pausing, you will see all the features, like map, weapons you can equipt, once you do aquire them. Its easy enough to work out. The main character you play is a Male called Edge, but you can rename him if you like. Edge is a mean spirited kind Of character & wants to get his 5 swords back that where taken from him before he was placed into a very long sleep by the gods. Be aware that there are some dialogs you may read that might shock you, or not!, I myself found them all rathe...

About This Game
GOKEN seeks to bring back everything that was right about gaming in an action packed open world environment in the form of the good old Action RPG genre and have the old school gamers tremble in nostalgia.
-Scenario-
Long ago, when gods lived amongst people...
There lived a swordsman who was given five swords forged by god himself.
Using these swords, the swordsman brought peace and order to the world.
People called the swordsman, "Wielder of the Five Swords"...
One day, during a fete to praise the gods, the blades of the swordsman turn against the gods for reasons unknown.
One of the gods, Ozone, furious with all his powers, sealed the swordsman away at the top of a mountain now known as Swords Peak.
This tale begins 5,000 years after the battle between the two, near a the small village of Cardina.
-Game Overview-
Seamless open-world game mechanics
While the game features a rather old school “quarter view” mechanic, the map transitions and event scenes, even the combat is all seamless as can be to enhance the overall gaming experience.Real time strategic action battle system
Utilizing 2 primary attack buttons, users can assign different weapons to each button to create a unique combo that fits the users need as they go. Monsters, bosses and stage gimmicks can require a specific type of weapon at times creating opportunities for users to strategize their best route of approach.Customizable Tattoo system
Utilizing "tattoos", users are given specific points upon leveling to get the protagonist inked as a form of powering up so it could be built to one’s own. Raising MAX HP and Stamina, learning new and special moves are just a few of many ways players are able to customize their character depending on their play style.Screenshots
User Reviews
I got this game mostly because the dev was so nice when asked for Linux support and delivered it quite quickly. There's still a few bugs that the devs will need to fix, but nothing too bad as I finished the whole game. Not everything is super clear as what you need to do, but it's not a big deal, as all in all everything is actually quite easy and so you figure it out eventually. The game is fun, has nice graphics, a nice variety of enemy, and I liked seeing stronger versions of the previous ones later on... It's not the game of the year, but I definitely enjoyed playing it! In case devs read this, here are my thoughts (in next message, stupid characters limit...)
Coming in I was expecting this to be a fast paced ARPG along the same lines as Ys or the like, unfortunatly while this game looks great and has excellent music it's let down by a few gameplay choices that just take away from my enjoyment. Firstly is the characters movement speed which is painfully slow and so getting around at any decent pace requires you to use the dash. Which brings me to my biggest issue, the stamina meter which will get eaten up because i want to progess at a decent speed, which means that when I run into an enemy I won't be able to attack because of course that needs stamina also. Now I could go around at the snails pace to conserve my stamina but unfortunatly the regem speed means that eventually you'll be stuck in the same place of not being able to attack or dodge. So while the game looks the business that is sadly all it does right now.
It's unfinished and I'm not sure it will ever be finished. It's fundamentally flawed in too many ways to be of a quality that I'd recommend. Sound effects and animations are extremely barebones. NPCs hover around without moving their legs like chess pieces being moved by a giant invisible hand. The footstep noise is a stock sound effect and gets annoying after about five seconds. Attack animations of both the player and enemies are extremely minimal and can leave you questioning how in the hell that attack hit you and why in the hell your attacks aren't hitting. Fundamental game aspects (like the stamina system) are still not even completely worked out. The English translation is a machine translation and is littered with grammatical issues. The art is pretty and the music is fantastic, but as a video game this is atrocious. If you expect a finished, fully playable game... do not buy this.
Great artwork. Thanks for the Linux port!
Just a straight up fun game. Haven't finished it yet, but have put several hours into it and I've loved every minute. Lots of nostalgic gameplay, It's something that I can pick up on a saturday after working all week and not be completely lost as to where I'm going. It's very reminiscent of legend of zelda meets secret of mana with graphics that fit the current systems, I like that they have a weapons upgrade path, though it's a little clunky to have to visit a blacksmith every time to see what items are needed to upgrade each sword. The enemies can be predictable, but that can also get you into trouble when you are feeling like you can't be hurt and then they throw you a curve ball and you have to reload from your last savegame (save often). Great to get in on early access for $14.99 and save a few bucks as they iron out the minor problems, pretty much a finished game as I see it. The only bugs I have run into are not gamebreaking either, just some menu problems which have consisted of...
just finished the game and let me say this game is very SHORT! the story isn't great. 3/10 gameplay fight mechanics of the game feels like it was made in the 90s. 3/10 the stages do differ but the monsters are just the same with different colors. 5/10 to be honest I have no idea why it was given many great reviews. the only good part about the game is its art. it's beautiful. other than that it is not a game to waste money on. and this game is definitely NOT like Bastion !!! no idea why people were saying this!
– 25 hours worth of content – No loading screens (except when entering indoors: shops, caves etc) – If you like the combat system at first impression, you'll like rest of the game There is no button for block, instead there is a stamina system with dodge.
Update: 35 hours to complete everything (find all secrets etc)
[EARLY ACCESS] I purchase this game so I didnt get a freebie. [Thank you for the Linux Version this was the main reason for buying this game and my love for Y's which this game resembles] So far the good: 1. Tight control on a SC 2 Nice Graphics and the colors they just pop all over the place. 3. The game studders a bit but not enough to distract you from the game play. Am sure this will be tweak in the final release. 4. The humor and some of the dialogues 5. Please allow the functioanlity of re-mapping the buttons on the game pad / Steam Controller The bad: None this is an Early Access so this is expected suprising polished.
I have a lot of small nitpicks about Goken that by themselves would be forgivable but together just made me too annoyed. Combine them with the fact that I wasn’t a huge fan of the sprint based combat and it wasn’t a fun time for me. For starters I find the map system next to useless. The map indicates general areas and some point of interests but you can’t use it to track quests. On top of that your quest log doesn’t track main quests only select side quests. You better write down any dialogue hints as to what to do or where to go because there won’t be much else to help you. You can’t access the map from a game pad either. Back in 2017 the developer indicated they wanted to get these features implemented but at the time of writing this about five years later and none of these have happened. As for the sprint based combat it is simply a matter of subjective taste. I understood what the developer was going for and for the most part I could make it work but the more I played ...
