About This Game

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is a new science-fiction-themed entry into the award-winning Civilization series. Set in the future, global events have destabilized the world leading to a collapse of modern society, a new world order and an uncertain future for humanity. As the human race struggles to recover, the re-developed nations focus their resources on deep space travel to chart a new beginning for mankind.

As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people into a new frontier and create a new civilization in space. Explore and colonize an alien planet, research new technologies, amass mighty armies, build incredible Wonders and shape the face of your new world. As you embark on your journey you must make critical decisions. From your choice of sponsor and the make-up of your colony, to the ultimate path you choose for your civilization, every decision opens up new possibilities.

Features

  • Seed the Adventure: Establish your cultural identity by choosing one of eight different expedition sponsors, each with its own leader and unique gameplay benefits. Assemble your spacecraft, cargo & colonists through a series of choices that directly seed the starting conditions when arriving at the new planet.
  • Colonize an Alien World: Explore the dangers and benefits of a new planet filled with dangerous terrain, mystical resources, and hostile life forms unlike those of Earth. Build outposts, unearth ancient alien relics, tame new forms of life, develop flourishing cities and establish trade routes to create prosperity for your people.
  • Technology Web: To reflect progress forward into an uncertain future, technology advancement occurs through a series of nonlinear choices that affect the development of mankind. The technology web is organized around three broad themes, each with a distinct victory condition.
  • Orbital Layer: Build and deploy advanced military, economic and scientific satellites that provide strategic offensive, defensive and support capabilities from orbit.
  • Unit Customization: Unlock different upgrades through the tech web and customize your units to reflect your play style.
  • Multiplayer: Up to 8 players can compete for dominance of a new alien world.
  • Mod support: Robust mod support allows you to customize and extend your game experience.

Take-Two and 2K games have updated all their games Terms of Service, turning this game as well as all of their other games into literal spyware.

To preface: I am one of the biggest Civ 5 fans out there, and I think that Civilization V: Brave New World is the pinnacle of the series. That being said, when Beyond Earth was released, every one bashed it for being a broken mess. Some people where bashing it for being too similar to Civ 5, others were bashing it for being too different. Most people however where hoping for an alpha centauri remake, and that is why they were disappointed. I never got to try it. After all these years, I found Beyond Earth with all the expansions at $11.99 on steam (offer going until Aug 18), so I thought to myself, why the hell not? I downloaded it, and suddenly I am playing it for 23 hours in just 3 days! This is the best Civ experience I had in years! The game is very familiar because it is built on Civ 5 rig, but yet very very fresh. The Good: 1- The theme and atmosphere is brilliant, especially if you like sci-fi. 2- The technology web is very refreshing, it allows different factions to...

it's been more than 10 years but I just went back to play it and it's actually not bad.

The gameplay is interesting and fun, but obstructed by obtuse futuristic-sounding names for things. Buildings and units in core Civ titles work and are intuitive because we can guess what buildings will do by their names. This game suffers in this regard because almost nothing is immediately recognizable. That could be overlooked... if the UI wasnt complete dog water. Legitimately the most infuriating UXUI experience of my gaming career (and I've played Halo Infinite).

This game broke on my first play through, not even half way through. Diplomacy is broken, your best allies can randomly all declare war on each other and you, creating a world war for no reason, technology button is broken, crashing the game when it opens, stopping you from even being able to play. The game both throws everything and nothing at you at once, techs that explain little, endless buildings that do basically nothing, relations with other empires are worse than Ghandi in Civ, the only time I had war was when my ally attacked me, even though I had enough forces to wipe them off the map. The UI is backwards, it displays what you hope it does but in the worst places on the screen, map modes are gone from Civ, making the whole map tell less and harder to read

I don't really understand the antagonism towards this game. It's a stable, solid addition to the Civ franchise. The work that has gone into the tech tree is impressive, the affinities and the way they interact with the broader game-play is very sophisticated and the design is beautiful. Only one minor gripe is maybe that the soundtrack is very unadventurous but hey! You can't have everything!

People don't like this game because they don't like having to play "on the fly" Make decisions, some are bad. Make alliances and try to keep them living. The point it, can you fix your civ with all the mistakes you've made?

Civilization Beyond Earth with the Rising Tide DLC offers an enjoyable science fiction Civ experience. If you like civ and sci-fi, you may consider this game worth purchasing on sale at a deep discount if you also buy the Rising Tide DLC. However, do not expect Beyond Earth to be remake of the much better Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Beyond Earth is its own thing, and I feel it is second tier Civ game below more popular classic first tier Civ games like Alpha Centauri, Civ IV, Civ V, and Civ VI. However, even as a second tier Civ game, Beyond Earth is very good and quite replayable as a sci-fi strategy game about colonizing a dangerous alien world.
