About This Game

Nightmare Boy is a metroidvania style, action/adventure 2D game.
It takes place in a diverse world, full of enemies from your worst Nightmares!
In your quest to save the Noctum from a self-proclaimed ruler, you'll meet weird and unique friends and foes. But tread carefully when talking or interacting with NPCs: Quirky characters and their reactions can have game-changing consequences. Fast reflexes and a taste for exploration are key if you intend to collect rare items, vanquish enemies, and eventually face your deepest fears.

This story takes place in Donorok, in the state of Noctum. After the King of Noctum, Aster, disappears, chaos rules over the world. The relationships between Monsters, Mongos and Dreamers are completely unstable, and Donorok - the land so heavily affected by the chaos - slowly absorbs terrain from the surrounding regions.

Balder has taken over and has ordered the monsters to retain any child who falls into the Nightmare. The key to continuing his rule is with the Nightmare Boy, Billy.

A colorful palette and an aesthetic straight out of your worst Nightmare! Main character animations are made up of over 500 drawings. Each level has its own unique enemies and atmosphere.

  • Character control is responsive and dynamic. As you progress through the story you will discover new abilities such as double jump, triple jump and hanging on walls. Powerful spells, explosives, and friends along the way will aid you in untraveled paths.
  • As the player exploring every corner that forms the Nightmare World, you will slowly complete your map.
  • There are many collectibles throughout the World that will decide which of the different endings the story concludes with.
  • Characters on your journey will offer advice, but it's up to you to take it - or not!

Each scene has its own musical composition and atmosphere. This provides an immersive experience and truly surrounds the player in the Nightmare World. This has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of Vic Hernand.

Nightmare Boy started out as a way of learning programming and game development. We’ve ended up making a game we have loved to play. We’re an Indie team of just 2 people: Mr. Garcai and Víctor Ávila. All graphical assets are credited to Mr. Garcai - illustration, design, scenarios, etc. He’s the creative mind in the team. Víctor takes the programming, development, animation integration…and puts all of Garcai creations to work!

I can't say that I don't like the game, as, conceptually, I do. Unfortunately, the faux-interlacing effect that the game has destroys my eyes, and gives me a headache after ~15 minutes of playing. We moved away from interlaced monitors for a reason, and it wasn't because an artificially-generated interlacing effect is somehow less annoying. Unfortunately, as another reviewer mentioned, there are no video settings at all. No option to choose your resolution, no option to disable the interlacing effect, and, seemingly not even an INI file I can edit to change settings. It checks your hardware, and sets things how it feels like they should be configured, and that's all. Add an option to disable interlacing so that I can get into the game a bit, and I might recommend it. Edit: The game is much more playable at 1080P, thanks to the new resolution settings, but the interlacing still bothers me - though, not nearly as much as it used to. I would still like to see the ability to disable the...

A really fun little Metroidvania game that is literally family friendly. A 5 year old can play this and enjoy it and a 50 year old can play this and enjoy it as well as everyone in between. The graphics are charming, the combat is rewarding and challenging right from the get go (depending on set difficulty). Has a nice retro filter if you're into that, it can be toggled on or off, so you don't HAVE touse it. Definitely worth the 10 dollars it costs.

No options to change resolution or pick desired viewing mode such as windowed, borderless, or fullscreen. This game forces a specific resolution in fullscreen because reasons. Cannot recommend this to anyone with a basic feature such as viewing preference customization removed for the end user.

This is a really cute Metroidvania/platformer. It is the right amount of spooky for Halloween and has a lot of charm. There are many colorful enemies, backrounds and friendlies, which is really refreshing in our current dark gloomy trends in gaming. At the time of writing this I appear to be about 75% along in the game and around 5 hours in. This game seems to be a little on the challenging side for a mostly casual gamer like myself. I did end up switching the difficulty to easy, but that's after playing through a ton of Cuphead recently and getting tired of dying a lot in. I do want to make a point to say the music is really good. It helps to push the game even more towards Castlevania, which is great for me. For under $10, it's a great game for fans of Castlevania, or for people that like Metroidvanias and want something a little different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bEoHf17H-g

The game is a good platform/metroidvania with smooth controls and nice graphics. I would not say it's a masterpiece but it's worth playing.

Cool graphics. Controls are nowhere near as good as the store page would imply. Jumping has an actual invisible cooldown, it's impossible to jump again immediately when landing. You'll have to wait about half a second at the least. It also boasts a decision system where your choices influence the game. This would work much better if it DIDN'T ingrain them into your data. You can die or kill yourself after making any choice but the game is gonna stick with what you picked. Basically it's probably very easy to fuck over your own progress by picking the 'wrong' dialogue options. As other reviewers pointed out, the game uses a permanent old TV effect which you cannot disable. The few settings options that are offered are for sound, resolution and m+k/controller options. I'm probably not going to continue playing this game as all these little things combined with seriously slow and boring dialogue and unskippable cutscenes which are also slow.

I want to like this game but so far I am hitting some major sticking points that make this game incredibly difficult to recommend. First the controls feel incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes double/triple jump just don't trigger. You can be spamming your jump button and have no response from the game. This includes attacks either sometimes not working at all or just not connecting with enemies. Wall grab is incredibly inconsistent when jumping off a wall. Sometimes you jump short distances, sometimes long. I thought I was holding a direction wrong on the d-pad but that turned out to not make any difference. It felt random. The little creatures that the game establishes early on that you should not kill are everywhere and can be killed by just about anything you do. One of the most aggravating things is sometimes enemies will just stand on a group of them or these things will hide behind a chest which you need to attack to open. This means there are points where you pretty much have ...
