Photo & Graphic Designer 12 Steam Edition

I've been using this product since it was introduced to me as a freebie back when the company was owned by Corel Corporation. Xara has been my go-to for many, many graphics in the years since. It looks deceptively simple from the user interface but you can go as deep as you like, and as exact as you like. You don't hear of it often in the US as it was created in England and is now owned by Magix, which I think is a German company (?). It is primarily a vector program that they've tossed a lot of photo handling capabilities and effects into over the last handful of versions, some of which are amazing. For the budget minded designer, it's a must have at this price. It can open Adobe Illustrator files from the native format. Zoom levels are beyond just about anything I've ever seen until very recently. Effects like blends, drop shadows, etc, are *startlingly* fast. You really have to push it very hard to slow it down. Ok, but quite basic. This isn't really a competitor to Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, it is a mixed bag of features in a sometimes questionable user interface. Instead of using the traditional menu bar which has always been in Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro (and other photo editing software such as Corel Draw) they have put some of these menus into tools. At first I was a bit shocked by this as it looked like there were hardly any features at all. However, I have later discovered that some of these features like the effects section (which seemed to be absent at first) hidden away in an effects tool. I can see how this makes the UI neater but really it's a bit disconcerting to start with. To be quite fair some of the features are quite good, such as the panorama tool which puts up to 8 pictures together in a bigger panorama. This is excellent vector art software. I have been using their web designer sister suite for awhile so I thought I would try out this Graphic Designer for some vector art needs, I'm quite pleased with it. Having used Adobe Illustrator & Flash in the past (way too expensive & clunky), Anime Studio (too expensive and more focused on animation), and even Inkscape (free but with a rough UI and limited import/export) I think Graphic Designer fits into a nice niche. It's under $100 but it feels very robust & powerful, it was quick to jump in and figure out how to start making & modifying vector shapes, filling with colors, adjusting line thickness etc. If you want something nicer than the free vector art programs, but more reasonable in pricing than the industry standards - this seems like a good choice.

Finaly Xara Photo & Graphic Designer has arrived on steam. I have been using xara version 5 for a long time. What i like about it the clean and easy way it works. Doing things with gradient and transparency fills is a breeze. Just drag and drop and clicking. But if you want precise you can put in exact numbers on the top bar. For new people it might be recomended to watch/read some tutorials on it. Also the photo part and vector part seem to have been integrated as one in this version. Maybe i should have gone to newer version sooner.

I first came across Xara, years ago, it was at that time Corel Xara, for one version, I think, but nevermind that. Xara is to me, mainly the best vector graphics program out there. I admit probably cause I got used to it. It really, features the easiest vector drawing, everything is under one tool. Unlike illustrator where there is a different tool for adding and editing achor point. I dont know about the photo editing qualities, to me xara is mainly and only vector drawing tool, and very good at it, to me its the best there is.

I had this for a while and it worked great for a little bit. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and now it is completely non functional. "Save default template" but it wont let you upload anything for a template, to edit or anything. Seems outdated and no upkeep is causing this to not function. I Would not recommend anymore.

worst software ever. Crash after crash.

Excellent piece of software, fast and intuitive. Although I bought this on Steam, I have just upgraded to the Designer Pro X package at very reasonable cost after emailing Magix direct.
