Ys VIII is a very flawed game, from its story to its core gameplay. However, at times it excels in these areas. I can't, in good faith, recommend it for several reasons: from bugs to wonky hit boxes, and, most critically, the story doesn't "start" until 20 hours in. It's a solid "mid" game with equally frequent highs and lows. All the lows are heavily front-loaded. If you're a fan of Ys, perhaps you'll tolerate it. If you're desperate for a long ARPG, you can probably do better, but it'll definitely scratch that itch.
Game Breaking Damage Glitch
To this day, over eight years from release, there is a game-breaking bug that insta-kills any boss. It is not hard to do and completely ruins the experience if you care about combat. High frame rates make it trigger with greater ease; it is fixable, but you need to go digging into the Nvidia control panel to limit your frame rate to 60 to *mostly* rid the bug. It's insane it has not been patched.
Story
Straight ...

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana stands as a remarkable entry in the long-running Ys series, blending fast-paced action RPG combat with an emotionally resonant narrative and rich world-building. Developed by Nihon Falcom, the game transports players to the mysterious Isle of Seiren, where the protagonist Adol Christin and his companions find themselves shipwrecked and struggling for survival. The title successfully balances exploration, story, and combat, delivering a compelling experience for both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise. The narrative of Ys VIII is one of its strongest elements. It unfolds through the intertwined stories of Adol and Dana, a mysterious girl whose origins and connection to the island slowly reveal themselves as the game progresses. The story expertly weaves themes of survival, mystery, and ancient lore, creating a captivating atmosphere that drives players to explore every nook and cranny of the island. The writing is enriched by well-developed characte...
first ys game and its peak
the game just does everything right. crack cocaine combat accompanied by a soundtrack composed by God Himself the most compelling dual perspective the medium will ever see with a story that makes me thankful to even exist and most of all the single greatest heroine there will ever be. dana forever. tldr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvBla5NUlvk
A solid action RPG that, while outright worse in gameplay compared to the rest of the series, still sets the bar pretty high in that regard and doesn't fall short in other categories.
Ys VIII was my first introduction to the series, and I am not disappointed. It's a wonderful game with fast-paced combat and a good storyline.
The controller support is the worst I have ever seen, RT bind to cancel, Y bind to confirm, start and select seems dead and everything is gambling. I can't see any point to keep number icon for controller, which also making it more confusing. The game crash twice before I start. Using a Nintendo pro controller with Steam Input ( it will be a chaos if not).
Finished it twice, first on PS4 and then the enhanced edition on PS5. The best Ys game — an awesome Robinson Crusoe-style adventure with fast and flashy combat, a gripping story, and likable characters.
The closest thing I can compare this to would be like watching Journey 2: the Mysterious Island (2012) and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (2008) back-to-back roughly 11 times with the Japanese dub AND 3D glasses. They even reference the 2012 movie by having the anime girl's chest bounce around - JUST like that scene with the Rock!
a good jrpg
