About This Game

From the creator of Home is Where One Starts… comes The First Tree, a third-person exploration game centered around two parallel stories: a fox trying to find her missing family, and a son reconnecting with his father in Alaska. Players take control of the fox on a poignant and beautiful journey that crescendos at the source of life, and perhaps result in an understanding of death. Along the way, players can uncover artifacts and stories from the son's life as he becomes intertwined in the fox’s journey towards The First Tree.

Key Features:

  • For fans of Journey, Firewatch, and Shelter.
  • Not a "fox simulator," but an emotional, intimate story by a one-man team with an ending you won't soon forget.
  • Featuring a gorgeous soundtrack by acclaimed artists like Message to Bears, Lowercase Noises, and Josh Kramer.
  • A short game (about an hour and a half) focused on story with some light puzzle solving and platforming.

The First Tree is a beautifully crafted, narrative-driven exploration game that blends touching storytelling with breathtaking visuals. You step into the paws of a fox, journeying through stunning, dreamlike landscapes while uncovering a parallel human story about loss, family, and finding meaning in life. The art direction is absolutely gorgeous, with soft lighting, vibrant colors, and environmental details that make each scene feel like a painting come to life. The atmospheric soundtrack complements the visuals perfectly, creating an emotional and almost meditative experience. What makes the game truly special is its heartfelt narrative. David Wehle’s writing feels personal and sincere, and while the story is relatively short, it leaves a lasting emotional impact. It’s the kind of game that stays with you long after the credits roll, inviting quiet reflection. That being said, The First Tree is not without its drawbacks. The gameplay is quite minimal — there’s little challe...

The First Tree is a visually beautiful game with emotional intentions, but it didn’t really connect with me. The fox’s journey had some touching moments, and the landscapes were nice to explore, but the gameplay—mostly walking and collecting stars—felt more like a chore than an experience. I can tell the developer put a lot of personal meaning into the story, especially around family and grief, but I found it hard to relate. The human narrative felt distant, and the platforming was awkward at times. It’s a sincere effort with a lot of heart, but it just wasn’t for me.

Walking simulator with kinda janky controls. The story was convincing at all.

A fox, a story and a musical background while playing. Solid 7.9/10 game.

I will say, sometimes it's hard to know what to do, where the stars are, even sometimes mix the story line up because you don't know which one to go to first. But overall, this game has such a deep meaning of letting go and moving on, to heal. It's one of my first games I ever played when I was old enough to understand, and still one of my favorites.

The First Tree tells a sweet and touching story that, while occasionally awkward, is ultimately moving and thought-provoking. The looping music and lack of volume controls drove me a tad insane, yet the emotional weight of the narrative still broke through, it’s the first time I’ve ever cried on stream. The ending, where players can leave a message, is a beautiful and memorable touch that lingers long after the credits roll. Would I recommend this game? Yes.
