About This Game

'In the infinitesimal spaces between the pages of every book lies an unseen universe: smaller perhaps than ours but filled with all the wonders, and horrors, conceivable by the human mind'

Enter into a land of dark fantasy with Sophia, an eighteenth-century librarian's apprentice to Queen Anne of England. Join her quest to find a way home and help her take revenge on the evil witch that tore her away from her lands.

Discover a world filled with political intrigue as a power-hungry Emperor seeks to wrestle control of the Twelve Duchies by use of his magical Affinity Guards, and get caught up in a rebellion where Sophia's abilities will help decide the fate of the strange, monster-filled world into which she's been swept.

Venture with her into steampunk, technomage lairs abandoned since the mythical 'Age of Words'. Share her descent into The Purple, a strange and disturbing underworld where everything lusts for flesh. Help her explore a dark forests under the curse of an Evil Blight and discover the reasons behind it. Help her make new friends in a dangerous world, and share in her first unlikely, romance.

Aid her in her discovery of an ancient, magical curse that lies over the world, denying all it's inhabitants the ability to read. Take control of ancient magical texts that, as she discovers them, will allow her to develop abilities strong enough to challenge the Emperor's most powerful Affinity Guards, and perhaps even the terrible witch who is responsible for tearing her away from her home.

About:

‘Unhappy Ever After’ is a dark, yet funny, RPG that takes traditional fairy tales and turns them on their heads. Along your journey you will meet familiar characters that you’ve know all your life and see them in new situations and within frameworks that you will make you both laugh and despair.

Beyond its parody to the fantasy, ‘Unhappy Ever After’ also aims to parody the real, drawing on situations that are all too pervasive in our world, such as drug abuse, terrorism, and dirty politics. Death too is a prevalent theme and no character, no matter how well known, how famous, or how integral to the plot, is safe from its cold hand!

Despite its beautiful graphics, wondrous music, and humorous interludes, ‘Unhappy Ever After’ is a game, in places, designed to shock and appal, and where your decisions, no matter how noble can lead to devastating ends.

Features:

* Explore a free-roam world where you decide who to help and who to leave to their own fate.
* Meet characters from ancient stories and rhymes such as Hansel and Gretel,or Little Red Riding Hood.
* A unique magic system where strengthening one ability weakens another.
* An addictive drug system, complete with dealers and quests.
* An adult-themed RPG with political coups, terrorism, drugs, murder, and revenge.
* Beautiful lands to explore.
* A coming of age story with meaningful character progression.
* Team up with interesting and powerful companions each with their own story, conversations, and personalities!
* A day and night system where characters go to bed and monsters come out at night.
* 14 hour story-line with many extra side quests, plus another 2 hour free bonus DLC 'The Maze of Cefgellin'
* Play on after the story's end, doing quests, and building up your character and base camp.
* Controller support, Mouse and Keyboard - full keybinding.

This review was written in English and Russian in purpose to save your money and time. “Unhappy Ever After” is a RPG in a grim fairy world where well-known tales and characters (Alice, Hеnsel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.) were twisted by wicked minds of developers from Warped Tales. Beyond its parody to the fantasy “Unhappy Ever After” also aims to parody the real world drawing on situations that are all too prevalent in our society such as drug abuse, terrorism, and dirty politics. “Unhappy Ever After” takes place in a dark fantasy land of Twelve Duchies where Emperor’s dictatorship is issued for legitimate power and mages’ resistance is called terrorism. I’d rather say it’s a mature story that provides a unique perspective on children’s tales while addressing the difficult issues that plague modern society. I really liked the main story and the Twelve Duchies’ background written with subtle humor and usage such adult themes like canniba...

This one has elements of greatness, but so far (7 hours in) seems to fall short in several ways. Fighting is both repetitive and boring as you'll rarely find weapon upgrades and your supporting characters abilities are relatively benign (especially Gretel's). That and after 10 levels, both the supporting characters still have access to only the first of their “Affinities/Abilities.” The problem I have is that the game never lets you gain much of an advantage over mobs as they level with you without limits (I've leveled my main character to level 12 and the mobs in the first area have adjusted to be at my level consistently). This pretty much takes away the incentive of fighting mobs/grinding to gain an advantage entirely--that and the fact that you'll struggle to find equipment upgrades which have even a slight impact to your characters' stats. Additionally, there seems to be many bugs impacting optimization (FPS lags happen often) and many more affecting items and quests (S...

This is an update of my review after finishing 40 hours of the game. I have just killed a big boss and concluded the main game. I am about to start on 2 different DLCs of this game. Now after 40 hours of this game, I have seen a number of shortcomings and bugs, and will try to write about them in this update, so that I present an accurate picture of the game. Shortcoming of this game. 1. This game is an ABANDONWARE, like what many other previous reviews have said. It was originally a Kickstarter game, where backers paid money directly to the developer to create this game and some DLCs. The developer got the money, created the game and 2 DLCs and left in February 2017. What this means is that currently there is no tech support of any kind, and there are many small bugs and irritating features which are not fixed. However, the game itself is still good enough to be played, and I have completed the main game. For the price of $6.99, I think it is definitely worth it for me. 2. My big...

This is my first review and I just HAD to write one for this game! In short, it's an excellent example of what can be acheived with the RPGmaker engine. It has some flaws, but I'm able to overlook them thus far. A lot of love and care has been put into the environment of the game. Pleasant music, weather effects, day/night system that isn't annoying, and best of all, well done balancing on battles. The story, while I won't give away too much, is actually captivating despite the fact that it piggybacks on the tale of Hansel and Gretel. It's not childish, at all. There is a lot of social/political plot work that adds feeling to the game. For the first time in a while, I actually feel like I can't get overpowered in a game. It forces you to manage your supplies and use all of your abilities strategically to get the most out of exploration. There are moments where I want to keep exploring but I know I need to rush back to a healing totem. Don't let that discourage you though, it's a ...

This is an edit of my earlier review. Initially, the way the monsters leveled with you, along with the lack of gear, made the battles very long and tedious. However, within days of posting my review, the developer has made several changes to the game that eliminate many of my negative comments. First, there is now a difficulty setting. Those who want the much more difficult battles, can have them, and those who want a bit less of a grind feel and a more casual experience can select the very easy or easy settings. I've tried them out, and it's like a completely new game. Even in very easy mode, the battles still require a bit of strategy and take a little time, but they are nowhere near the length they used to be. Monsters will be a lower level than you and do far less damage, which means the constant need for health items is also greatly diminished. As for the game itself, beautiful graphics and environments. There was a lot of thought and a lot of custom detail that went into th...

This game is made in RPG Maker. I know a lot of people dislike that but I play a lot of RPG Maker games, usually free ones but sometimes I will purchase if they seem good. This one is definitely worth the money! But if you hate RPG Maker titles don't buy this. GOOD: - Lighting. I like how it gets dark and the worl looks beautiful bathed i the red glow of dawn and dusk! - Music. Ominuos and chilling. - Graphics. Obvs not AAA , but for this style of game they are top notch. - Story. I'm only 30 minutes in but so far it's unique and has interesting characters. - Length. People say its over 20 hours long. NOT SO GOOD: - Battles are a bit boring. I'd like more enemies but it could be because I'm not far in. - SFX are generic. I've lowered them right down. - Menus. Item, skills, and options could all do with a makeover. They are quite close to generic. - A bit creepy. I wouldn't let my eight year old niece play it. So far I'd give this game, as an RPG Maker Game, 9/10 - compare...

After some magical event, Sophia is teleported to another world and quickly encounters Hansel and Gretel. Things get much darker very quickly. In this world, everyone (except Sophia) has lost the ability to read but instead have special magical powers called Affinities. Sophia has to find a way to get back to London to escape this dark and scary world as soon as possible before something terrible happens. It was fun for about a half hour, until I got to the first city and then it started to jump frames like crazy. I dont know why, everything else runs fine, fallout 4 runs perfectly, but this game makes my computer freak out. I was really looking forward to diving into this game, and will try again in the future after I've scoured forums trying to see if I can get it to work, and hopefully I wont be left Unhappy Ever After...
