Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap

Meh, it's nostalgia fuel, only modernized... The clunk is still there despite the fancy new animated skin overlay and modernized music. An absolute exercise in frustration if you never bothered playing through the original as a child / teen... whatever... During your formative years, when you didn't have care in the world. The only care you had was beating some cryptic retro bull$h|t game using a walk through... because let's face it, you're not finishing this game without one... It would take you the better part of a decade pressing up in random locations, where you think a secret door is... and you still wouldn't find them all. I'm recommending it because in today's modern age, the game is very beatable, as there's that sweet internet resource, but honestly? You'd never have a chance in hell of finishing this as a kid without a hint book or something... It's just alright... I would honestly give it a neutral rating if there were an option for it but it's an acquired taste f...

I guess good parts out of the way first, because I don't think this game is that good. The game looks incredible wow what a shocker, the music is really good too with really great instrumental performances. The fact that you can freely switch between the retro and modern versions (and that you can do it for visuals and audio seperately) is a really cool feature add that they didn't have to do. Unfortunately the best art and music in the world can't fix such a gameplay-riddled mess (side tangent, it's extremely annoying how with this remake, they left the gameplay, the most flawed part of it, completely untouched, although the main point of remakes is to polish and fix the weaker parts of a game aside from just improving parts with no weaknesses already). Such a wonderful game. Beautiful visuals. Great gameplay. Excellent character designs. The combat mechanics are very simple but it is a very simple game.

Wonder Boy is an amazing game, I have played for just over 47 hours. I like the fact that you can choose to be a girl or a boy (very inclusive) and it may take a while to get used to the the controls but once you do, it becomes easier. I enjoy it very much. Its beautiful remake and would gladly spend my money on this game.

One of my favorite games on the Sega Master System when I was a kid and I still found it enjoyable all of these decades later.

An absolutely gorgeous remake/remaster of the original 1989 original. There are moments where the old-school game design shines through, for better and for worse, but it's highly satisfying to finish a new area of the game and teleport back to the hometown. It can be a bit crushing to get super far into a dungeon or area, only to die and get sent all the way back to the hometown. Fortunately, though, the dungeons are usually quick enough to jump back into without too much work. The art and animation is a treat to look at, and I love the orchestral arrangements of the original chiptune music. I really appreciate the ability to toggle the retro music and animation, with a couple of extra options for the sound chip and CRT filter. It's super fun to compare the old sprites and sounds to the updated versions.
