About This Game

Civil War: 1861 covers the opening battles of the American Civil War. The game covers both the small and large actions of that momentous year, starting with the battle at ‘Big Bethel’, on to the comparatively vast engagements at ‘Bull Run’ and ‘Wilson’s Creek’.

In 1861 both sides have plenty of volunteer recruits who, though enthusiastic, lack battlefield experience. On the weaponry side much of the equipment still belongs to the Napoleonic Era with a plethora of muzzle loading, smoothbore artillery.

Many of the commanders, who most would identify as the leaders the civil war armies, are still junior officers in the engagements recreated in this game. Command the Union or Confederate forces in these key battles.

Can you change history? Good luck and on to battle!

This is a comparative between this game and Sierra's Civil War – Generals to highlight some of the shortfalls for the game. From what I can tell, both games are: - Historically accurate - Contains levels of difficulty, although Sierra's Civil War has more difficulty levels - Turned Base - Hexadecimal movements There the similarities end in my opinion. This game does not come close to Sierra. The following are some of the limitations I perceived in playing this game: - Cannot combine infantry with artillery which is common in a military setting. - Each scenario is separately self-contained and does not build on earlier victories or defeats (e.g., you are not rewarded/punished for an earlier battle and cannot improve your army’s weapon) - Does not appear to be much logic on direction and range of artillery. - Simple hit/miss results. - Barricades/rough grounds/elevation does not seem to have much effect on battle. - Levels of health, morale, experience, troop strengt...

Very easy game. It does not simulate ACW warfare and is more of a 'shoot-em-up'. I will not be buying any more from this series based on this game.

As the title states, deals with the opening year of the American Civil War. Gameplay is as most HexWars games. Decent array of scenarios. If you are comfortable with HexWars style, recommended.
