The visuals are very well made and create the right mood. Unfortunately, the game fails to teach the player how to play. I didn't even entirely understand what the mouse menu was for. I was able to pass through the first area of the game and made the train run but after that i was clueless on what to do. I kept clicking on things but nothing happened. You should at least give the option for some hand-holding to the player, like visual clues or text clues. After a while i was frustrated of seeing no progress and having to rely on youtube videos or game guides to keep playing, and so i can't recomend it.

Dark Train is a beautifully mysterious point-and-click adventure game. Its world never really becomes familiar: of course you know what a squid is, or what a train is, also the basic physics seems to work and there are familiar icons near train controls, like thunderbolts and water droplets... but why is this squid chained to the train, where does this train go, and why is there a little city inside of an ordinary cargo container? Given time, you'll get the answers to these questions, only to find out that the game has the new ones prepared. And the thing is, it is not frustrating, it's more wonderous, really. The exchange is done with a good pace, and the things you discover are always interesting and sometimes pleasantly unexpected. Dark Train shows definite and solid understanding of exploration-based gameplay. And there are lots and lots of things to explore. First and foremost, the train is a big world-in-itself. Apart from obvious functional parts, it has four cargo containers,...
Wow! This game just got me hooked! When I saw the trailer with the making of, I knew I had to try this one out. I love it, when the graphics are done in unconventional ways, like here with papercuts. You immediately get thrown into the story. No explanation. And that's perfect, Very interesting, innovative puzzles. The playable character is extraordinary, too. Some kind of mechanical squid; and you don't point and click, you can move the squid with the xbox-controller (or mouse) to the parts of the screen, you want to interact with: a big plus for me, because it's my preferred way to move in a game. Then the game has a slightly apocalyptic mood. Something seems to have happened to the world, it's full of strange mechanical devises, but no... OK, I don't want to spoiler too much, but I think this game is perfect for players that love puzzle adventures like Samorost or Botanicula. It's pretty different, but similiar to the games I mentioned, its approach is really special. I'm looking...
Dark Train is a beautiful, wonderful game. While the developers have termed it "tamagotchi"-style, this description woefully underdescribes the gameplay, which is very much puzzle-oriented. Nominally, one must keep the train supplied with electricity, fire, and water, but there are no dire consequences to allowing any of these to run out: One must simply wait for the required resources to come along, and then once any puzzle at hand has been solved, one is gothily chugging away down the tracks once again. There are a few "secret" areas that can be missed if you aren't actively trying to find them, but bypassing them won't impede gameplay. The puzzles aren't incredibly hard or anything, but they're all enjoyable and certainly nontrivial, and the art and sound are an absolute feast. It's worth playing Dark Train simply to absorb the delicious atmosphere; Dark Train is replayable simply for that experience. My only real complaint is that the game ends abruptly -- one may be expectin...
This game is different, but... it's definitely an AMAZING game. Unique atmospheric hidden-object puzzle adventure. The visuals make this game incredible because everything looks like it was made from... paper! :-) Take a look at the Making of Dark Train Visual Youtube video and short Story of Dark Train (game itself contains almost no text). Díky za hru. Těšíme se na pokračování!
Why have horrendous pixel hunting or bad controls when you can have both? Either that was the whole sadistic idea behind Dark Train's unnecessarily cryptic, unintuitive game design or something went absolutely wrong. And I'm one of these people who don't find, say, tank controls that bad and played through all of Sierra and LucasArts games without complaining. I mean, you done fucked up your game if you managed to turn me away like this in less than an hour. Interesting visuals are probably the only thing going for it. P.S. The controls are awful for both mouse and gamepad. Had to check a playthrough to make sure that them lame pixel-hunting+busywork puzzles stay the same throughout the whole game. They do.
I have deleted the review I was writing for this game 3 times already and I just not able to find word which can describe it... If you like atmospheric games you have to try this one. I believe that this is one of those rare hidden gems just waiting to be discovered by more people...
If I had to drescribe this game with one word, I would go with "different", because it IS different. In more words, it is poetic, original, fascinating. Some puzzles are easy, some are not. And the amazing thing is, that the game is not using any text. You have to figure everything by yourself, and that is really the fan part. I have finished my first run through it today, and found out, how much I have missed. So I will play it again (and probably again).
Well this game certainly looks incredible... that's about as much as I can say in terms of the pros. As for the cons: - Advertised as no help/hints which is normally fine - but the game is too unintuitive for that - Awkward floaty controls becomes obnoxious quickly (think Octodad-ish controls) - Pixel hunting interactions due to movement awkwardness and small target areas - No story at all nor any discernible objectives (though didn't play long) - Mechanics feel inconsistent where sometimes I'd be able to do something but then would struggle a bit to do it again. There were a few times where I'd do something that caused some action to occur but had no idea what I did. - Terrible game menus... when you right click, you'll get the main menu (for some reason esc is pause only), but it's expressed as three tiny icons without any text and the icons have seemingly no relation to its action. In fact, I never could figure out what the icons represent and how they correlate to their actions...
Good idea. Poor execution. The game had so much going for it but it really is a mess of a game. Would have been great with better direction . Really just a freaking mess.
