About This Game

Winner of Best Game at the 2018 BAFTA Game Awards, as well as Best Narrative awards at the GDC 2018 Choice Awards, 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards, and The Game Awards 2017, What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state.

As Edith, you’ll explore the colossal Finch house, searching for stories as she explores her family history and tries to figure out why she's the last one in her family left alive. Each story you find lets you experience the life of a new family member on the day of their death, with stories ranging from the distant past to the present day.

The gameplay and tone of the stories are as varied as the Finches themselves. The only constants are that each is played from a first-person perspective and that each story ends with that family member's death.

Ultimately, it's a game about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us.

Created by Giant Sparrow, the team behind the first-person painting game The Unfinished Swan.

This game has the most innovative storytelling I’ve ever experienced. It’s incredibly satisfying to go through all the small stories—each told in a unique way—and then piece them together to reveal the final picture. I highly recommend this game; after playing it, I felt inspired to start writing a diary. Few games make me want to change something in my own life, but this is one of them.
A Tragic, Imaginative Uniqueness.
This game is based on the story of the Finch family, who died mysteriously, tragically, and uniquely. Each family member has their own unique characteristics. Their imaginations are truly beyond reason, yet each story has a tragic ending and meaning. Each family member's story has equally unique gameplay, accompanied by calming music and visually pleasing art, albeit a bit horrific. But all of that makes this game one of the best indie games worth playing, in my opinion. "If we lived forever, maybe we'd have time to understand things. But as it is, I think the best we can do is try to open our eyes and appreciate how strange and brief all of this is." — Edith Finch

Kinda wacky. I liked Gregory's story the most, because it's an adult telling the story, so this may just be the most reliable one. In most other stories, it's a child is telling its own. I also liked Lewis' story. It portrayed very well this feeling of disconnect between mind and body. Alienation, you might say, as you become a cog in the machine. I also liked how the story is told. Text, which is voiced by Edith Finch, appears on objects in the world. This makes it more immersive than reading subtitles. The biggest downside of this game is that it's incredibly vague in every regard. All it does is to vaguely hint at how someone died/disappeared or felt. A lot of the stories seem unrealistic, and there's never followup. There's very little interaction between characters, so it's hard to figure out what's real. It doesn't tell you what's the story behind the old house. All in all, it feels very unsatisfying and unfinished.. well, I guess the whole point of the game is to let you spec...

from start to finish, this game is a masterpiece. even the credits are beautiful to witness. this game has such a powerful way of storytelling. you can only experience it for the first time, and so i encourage you to seek out all the wonderful and tragic little details that form one of the most amazing, immersive environments i have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. the world-building is just unmatched. there is so much creative passion that has been poured into this game. every room is a story of its own; more than that: its literally a life of its own. fyi, i think gregory and lewis' stories really touched me the most. all of them were so well told whilst being fun to experience, but those two felt really quite special: i think maybe a little more personal than the rest, or perhaps just told even better. thank you for making something so beautiful!

you'll never look at a fish the same way again(rip lewis) jokes aside, this game gets under your skin with no intention of getting out "if we lived forever, maybe we'd have time to understand things.."<3

The most overrated narrative game of all time; an opulent mess wrapped in colourful paper. It seems to have a message to send, but it really doesn't have a coherent one.
The Best Storytelling I’ve Ever Seen… With Stories I’ll Forget Tomorrow
What Remains of Edith Finch is a highly rated game that I had heard praised over and over as a masterpiece. I finally gave it a go and I have to say it is one of, if not the best, storytelling games I have ever played. The way the story flows is beautiful. I also appreciate that it was perfectly paced, because games nowadays often stretch stories out for no reason. This one did not overstay its welcome. However, I have to be honest. The individual stories did not hit for me. The storytelling was amazing, but the content of the stories themselves felt like they were just… there. I often found myself thinking “cool story bro” after each one. It was like, “Okay, that is fine, you died in that manner, but now what?” The lack of impact in the actual stories is, in my opinion, the game’s biggest flaw.

While it is a short experience, typically lasting only a couple of hours, its impact is long-lasting. The game's narrative is powerful and well-crafted, and the way it uses the medium of video games to tell its story is nothing short of brilliant. It's a gem that shows how a strong narrative and creative design can be more compelling than complex puzzles or combat. If you're looking for a profound and emotionally resonant story that can only be told through a game, "What Remains of Edith Finch" is an essential play. Some of the "ingredients" are surprisingly exotic. You've got a dash of magical realism, a pinch of a horror-comic aesthetic, and a generous dollop of emotional weight. It's a fantastic, flavourful journey from start to finish. The whole thing comes together in a way that feels rich and satisfying.

I'm writing this review after months of finishing this game. Didn't plan to but this game has been living in the back of my mind ever since I played it and I felt like I owe this game a review. Even after all this time the emotions this game stirred up in me haven't faded. If anything, this game is more of an experience that left me sitting in silence when the credits rolled. Cried because it was so beautifully human. Story wise, it feels all so beautiful and woven together yet will catch you off guard when least expected. Each shift in game play felt symbolic and meaningful, very effortlessly creative. Visually, The finch house felt so alive and filled with details. More than simply beautiful was really moved me was how real the house felt. It felt like I was walking through someone else's life and history. I can't recommend it enough and even months later, I find myself thinking about this. That's why I'm here now writing all this, this is a game that I will probably carry around in ...

The game is relatively short, but the story is very catching. The story sequences and mechanics are very unique, definitely worth to check out in general.
