RPG in a Box lets you easily turn your stories and ideas into games and other interactive experiences! As its name suggests, it contains everything necessary for doing so, all packaged together "in a box". The software is designed with a fun, beginner-friendly approach in mind as to not require any programming or modelling knowledge, while still providing a wide range of customization and openness. You can export your game to a standalone format for Windows, Linux, and MacOS, allowing others to play it without needing to own RPG in a Box!

While RPG in a Box is constantly being expanded with new features and functionality, you can refer to the list below for a general, high-level look at what's currently possible in the engine.

Voxel Editor

Build tiles, objects, and characters from 3D pixel blocks (i.e. voxels) and easily animate them with the editor's frame-based, stop-motion animation system. Importing from MagicaVoxel (.vox) and Qubicle (.qb) is also supported.

Map Editor

Create grid-based worlds with the tiles you've built, then bring them to life by adding interactive NPCs and objects using the editor's intuitive navigation and interaction system.

Scripting

Set up and trigger in-game events with the visual, node-based script editor. Simply drag and drop the desired actions (no programming knowledge required), or manually code "quick scripts" using Bauxite, the custom, Lua-like scripting language.

Dialogue

Write conversations for your NPCs using a visual, flowchart approach similar to that of the script editor. Branching dialogue is supported via player choices and condition checking.

Camera System

Choose from three available camera presets (standard, isometric, and first-person) or tweak the settings to create a custom camera. Stage dynamic cutscenes for your game using the engine’s flexible camera scripting system.

Combat Systems

Choose from tactical turn-based, real-time, or menu-driven turn-based combat, with more options and customization to come in future updates.

UI Editor

Design themes and customize the appearance of many other interface elements such as the inventory, main menu, and credits roll. The powerful widget system allows you to easily create unique mechanics for your game.

Item Editor

Define items for the player to find in containers or earn through the completion of tasks. Attach scripts to trigger effects for potions and other consumable items.

Sound FX Generator

Generate fun, retro-style sound effects using the built-in tool based on Dr. Petter’s SFXR.

I've used this software non-stop for about a month now (hundreds of hours) trying to build a quality game and absolutely CAN NOT recommend this engine to anyone other than tinkerers and hobbyists who want to explore game dev but don't expect much out of it. The developer closed his discord before I actually bought the software and only has a forum (in 2025? yes a forum) for support/suggestions/etc. I shouldn't list support because you won't get much of that. I've received zero support replies from the actual developer after multiple support requests to address current features that don't function as they should. One of my support requests is 28 days old and not a single reply. I've been told by someone in the community who runs his own discord for RPGiaB that the tool was never meant to be a professional engine. The developer clearly wants to dev and make the money but don't want to do the other tasks necessary to run a software business. This is a hobby/passion project. If you w...

I've been making games as a hobbyist for over 20 years, and recently was recommended to try RPG in a Box. I have to say, I love this. This was exactly what I was looking for. It's surprisingly easy to use and surprisingly versatile. It's something that could be fun for kids to play with, and fun for older adults like me to play with. Can you make a commercial game with it? Probably ... if it's for people who like quirky old-school games. What I love is the ability to literally draw the walls and floors with pixels, and create my own objects if I want to. I love that I don't have to make the art in another program and port it in, but can just simply use this. I love that it's not a base program with hundred of dlc art sets. I was looking for something simple and fun to use, and that's what it is. How much do I like it? I got this for free through another game store, and liked it so much, I came over to steam and bought it here just to give support to the dev.

Let me preface this with a few things that I think are important when you are reading this review, but also the other reviews on here. 1. I have used this software, Unity and RPG Maker. 2. I have not published a game (as of yet) and probably most of the reviews on here have not either. 3. I do not know how to script/code. Only visual scripting. Now that that's addressed I can tell you why I enjoy this software, why some of the negative reviews may be a bit off, and why I recommend it to others. Firstly this software has a lot of strengths. Of the ones I have used (as prior mentioned), this one is by far the easiest to pick up. If you are a solo dev, or an indie dev with a taste for low poly, this software nails that beginner niche hard. You just jump in and start making things. The toolset is fairly straight-forward and the software features an "in game" documentation/wiki so you can search keywords to things you don't understand and look for explanation. The Dev has also included...

I appreciate the work that Justin is doing for this project. This is a really fun and easy tool to develop games. It's not really meant for creating a "big" game right now but who knows what will happen in the future.

This recaptured the magic of exploring story ideas from when I was a kid in the 80s playing with Adventure Construction Set. It's great to be able to create a low-fi retro type of game with modern conveniences (3d space, voxels instead of pixels) without having to create all the mechanics from scratch, or being boxed into a specific RPG style. Highly recommend for anyone who has a story to tell and doesn't want to spend all of their time reinventing the wheel or attempting to compete with AAA production values.
