About This Game

The Light͛ or entry-level version of the amazingly powerful PD Howler - the digital painting program for Windows, powered by Project Dogwaffle.

It might be the light version, but it is still amazingly powerful and yet highly affordable. PD Particles 9 can be used to create image assets, do matte paintings, explore the forming of symmetrical or seamless patterns and textures, create user interfaces and much more. It is a great companion to your existing 2D and 3D tools.

  • Powerful Digital Paint program with numerous brushes: particles, bristles, custom images, animbrushes...
  • Specifically designed with touch and pen users in mind, but just as powerful with a mouse and keyboard.
  • Intuitive controls. Easy access to the tools and their many options.
  • Example features in Particle brushes: randomized params, force-field, gravity and mouse sensitivity movements.
  • New colour theme system making it easy to create your own colour worlds.
  • A selection of particle painting features as foliage painting tools and more.

As your creative skills grow, the PD series will grow with you. You can move up to PD Artist 10 which adds more filters, 3D landscapes modeling and rendering. Once you have mastered digital painting with PD Artist, why not add animation to your skill set with PD Howler?

Here are a few more key features to keep you busy painting with PD Particles 9:
  • A variety of preset brushes to simulate natural media like oil, translucent water color, airbrush etc...
  • Post-FX in the brush for added realism such as pigment lifting
  • Particle brushes for grass, tufts, bushes
  • Multi-rules based foliage brushes for complete trees from trunk to branches, to twigs, leaves and flowers on top
  • Awesome bristle brushes
  • Orbiting particle (orbicle) brushes that follow your mouse pointer like a beehive and leave surreal traces
  • Various color pickers and shortcuts to fit into your accelerated workflow.
  • Main image buffer combine with alternate (Swap) image for various image effects
  • Enhanced curve tool that even simulates tablet pressure when using the mouse
  • Must-have essential filters to get started with space art and other pattern creations or color enhancements
  • Insane(!) lens flares - with presets and fully customizable options
  • Tools: brushes, fill tool, linear tool, curve tool, gradients & FX, various selection tools for alpha masking, Custom brush keying and pickup, Viewing controls, and misc others.
  • Natural media: many presets, very customizable with opacity, step distance, speed-based scale, random position, scale and angle, random hue and more, color bleed, dryout,...
  • Full tablet support for pressure and in some cases even angular spin
  • Mirror mode and Symmetrical painting, Kaleidoscope mode
  • Brush keying to map color(s) to transparency in the brush

I made a guide to the keyboard shortcuts for this program in the Community Hub. A light version of Howler.... has essentials, but compared to Howler, has very little. Compared to most digital painting software, it has a truckload of tools. 'run as administrator' mode may be required. All tool grouping and keyboard shortcuts are non-standard and will make sense after a while. My 4 year old loves to use this program as of recent to paint. My wife also enjoys using this program to paint. It's a lot more than people think it is. It's too bad people aren't playing with it more to see that Update: While the content in buffers appears to not save while in buffers, I've found that the Swap buffer will save when using the lyr save option. The brush buffer(store brush) saves out and imports separately. Update: As of more recent testing, I'd say DCI 2K Native(2048 x 1080) is as large as you should go if you're planning to use the various plugins(k), like starfield. Update: As of most ...

This software is absolutely crab. Positive: 1. Good looking particles Negative: 1. It's in fullscreen, nobody needs fullscreen for a graphic software 2. You are not able to draw on transparent background (and save it as png), if I'm wrong, the useabilty of the software is even worse than I thought. So you cant reuse the particles in other software 3. The software is crashing all the time, is not in the taskbar, so minimize it, and you have to minimize all other windows to get it back (why?!?) I just want my money back.

PD Particles 9 is a cheap painting program. As far as I'm aware it's the only piece of art software like this on steam that is this cheap so if you have limited needs or just want a bit of relaxing fun then it's an ideal buy. If you are more serious about your art then you will probably want PD Howler by the same company. Some of the drawbacks are no layers and a lack of accurate colour picking. The UI is also a little inconsistent and weird. The brushes are really great and customizable though, which is the best part about this program. If the program is on sale and you just want to draw, this is a no-brainer, buy it now.
