About This Game

This project combines graphics by Hiroshi “Mr. Dotman” Ono, the artist behind such Namco classics as Dig Dug, Xevious, and Mappy, and sound by Yuzo Koshiro, composer of Streets of Rage, The Revenge of Shinobi, and Shenmue, to complete an arrange version in 1980s arcade style.

Like fools, we rely on games offered for our favorite platforms that are published in magazines, but lately, they seem to have all become so simple, demanding too little of the player’s intelligence and creativity. Now a game has been created that makes us stand up and cry, “Let’s do this!!"

This quote is from an article announcing Cosmic Cavern.

Cosmic Cavern was published in the July 1980 issue of I/O Magazine in Japan. As the article illustrates, Space Cavern was extremely addictive because it allowed players to express their imaginations, was densely packed with pure fun, and was highly innovative. It gained incredible popularity and was ported to a wide range of 8-bit computers of that era.

In addition to the original version, this masterpiece compiles two arranged versions that modify frustrating parts of the original with modern gameplay, in addition to enhanced features and two-player co-op. That’s three games in one!

Hiroshi "Mr.Dotman" Ono drew graphocs of these games and many more.

It's not for everyone--the play control and general game concepts are quite archaic. It is however historically interesting and lovingly ported/updated. The game is only similar to Dig Dug on a surface level as it's more of a base defense situation that needs to be approached with a unique strategy. As a museum piece it'd be nice if there were some more supplemental materials (interviews, original source code, translated articles) either in-game or as an external download. Either way, I'd love to see more of this kind of update on steam instead of barebones roms running on bad emulators.

Fun classic PC game updated to a 'modern' version while also keeping one of its alternate ports within the game. Defend your base, dig up powerups and score boosting items, and above all, be ready for when things escalate to new, terrifying territory.

This game is fun and crazy addictive to boot! It's a great port, and unlike a lot of other, lazier ports, doesn't run in an emulator. You can get the full, original, cosmic cavern experience. Which you may not know you want, but actually, you do. Many people, like myself, would never get the opportunity to play this game otherwise, which is a shame, because it's awesome. There are some difficulties, the game has its refresh rate, and thus its game speed, tied to your monitors, so if you're running at anything beyond 60hz, it's difficult to play. You can manually set the framerate using 3rd party software, so that's not much of a problem, but still, something to note. In any case, the dev is excellent at responding to posts on the community forum, and did say that a patch is in the works. Something like that. Beyond that, which, hey, may be a bit annoying, this is a hearty recommendation. This game is a lot like a diamond, deep underground, and worth seeking out.

Reluctantly going thumbs-down here, I've played quite a few Mindware games and I like them, they are nice bits of late 70s/early 80s gaming nostalgia, plus they include the original PC/Apple 2 verisons with NES-style remakes.. This one is another fun and challenging simple game, but this one has a lot of problems with unresponsive controls, both with keyboard and controller. If you can get it cheap, either by completing a bundle or on sale for a couple bucks, it's worth a try if you like Mindware's games or classics like this one. Just be prepared to be frustrated by the controls. (Also, some people complain about no Fullscreen option. There IS a fullscreen option available, you have to navigate to the game options menu to find it-use the keyboard to do so)

Too bare-bones for the price, not as "arcade" as the trailer would imply, this game would improve a lot if it had a bit more variety, or a level editor, like Lode Runner, or "solve the situation" puzzle stages. As is, I can't recommend.
