I didn't listen to the negative reviews, and I paid for it in more ways than one. I bought it on sale thinking "75% off? That's a steal! Fifteen bucks for exactly what I need, how bad can it be, really?" Visual Novel Maker is a snake that WAITS to strike. It's not going to brick your project until you are several hours in with and have a good flow going. It will wait until you actually have something of substance—and then boom. All of it, completely unreadable by the engine. None of the dialogue you wrote is acknowledge. You can see it sitting there in the scene editor, but for all intents and purposes, your project is toast.
