I had a great time with this remake and would give a 9/10. I played System Shock 2 long ago and loved it, but was always too put off by the seemingly archaic nature of SS1 to give it a shot. So when this remake was announced I was very excited! And, for the most part, this game exceeded my expectations. System Shock, like System Shock 2, is a kind-of immersive sim, kind-of RPG, kind-of FPS, full-on survival horror, action-adventure game. The obvious modern parallel is Prey (2017), which is certainly a spiritual successor to the System Shock series. However, Prey is a bit more full fledged in it's immersive sim and RPG elements. I do think System Shock has better combat than Prey, largely due to the much better enemy variety. It feels like a more polished version of Bioshock, though the Bioshock games blow it away in terms of level design and enemy design. Another game series that I think is similar is Metroid, especially the Metroid Prime games. The pacing and vibes are similar as wel...

It is with a heavy heart I say I did not enjoy this game. It is cryptically old school in some of the worst ways. Night Dives visual upgrades are stellar, and it never veers too far from it's cyberpunk aesthetic. I even didn't find the cyberspace missions offensive. What I did find offensive is the frustrating level design and bland combat, as well as the glacial progression. This game is just too slow. I just beat King's Field IV, which is a game that is visibly slow, and I felt like every 2 hours I sat down I made significant progress. In 2 hours of System Shock I will have barely cleared one, convoluted level. If you're looking to re-experience this game, it is a treasure. If you're coming to this for the first time, I suggest going directly to System Shock 2, especially with the recent remaster.
Nostalgia is a fickle mistress. But this game was done right by with this remaster.
A profoundly enjoyable, but sometimes confusing, immersive sim experience that culminates into one of the more enjoyable modern gaming experiences I've had.
If you're into old school gaming, this is it. It's like the original, but heavily upgraded. Unfortunately I didn't finish the game, which is something I rarely ever do, but this one really P***ED me off. I played throughout all the levels, wrote all my codes down, yes there are codes and hints you need to write down, it's legit OLD SCHOOL gaming, which is usually up my alley. But when I got to the Reactor area to shut down the sequence, you have to input 6 digits that you find throughout the game, which I have and when I went to shut it all down, guess what? Nothing worked. I tried everything to input the codes, switched them around, retrace my steps and literally LOOKED at the same blinking numbers after each destroyed node 4 freakin' times and still nothing worked. Is it a glitch? Or human error? I don't know, but I absolutely hate having my time wasted. If you want OLD SCHOOL, here it is. But if you want to play a game for nothing and achieve nothing? Then this is the game for you.
Enjoyable trip to nostalgia town. Updated for modern times, but gameplay is a child of it's time in some ways.
Hacker, focker and docker enter the bar. Bartender with glowing green eyes and female voice says: "Look at you, %cker!" -------- I love what Nightdive did with the first System Shock - the Remake is very good Immersive Sim, with attention to details and it is true to original. I hope they will do a remake of first Deus Ex someday.
This is what every single player game should aspire to be. Fantastic experience, gorgeous graphics and intuitive gameplay. Its no wonder this game is a cult classic and is one of very few games that actually needed a remake.
