As a History Major in undergrad, I've used this game to study geography, and it was reasonably effective.

To fix the game's performance issues on Windows 10/11, download and install the latest 32 bit DXVK dlls to the RomeTW.exe folder. DXVK gives a massive frame rate boost by wrapping the game's DirectX 8 calls to Vulkan. FPS in battles for me went from 30-45 FPS to 55-80 FPS.

I don’t think I’ll ever touch this version of the game again, but I can tell you, it’s one of the few games I’ve spent countless hours on. This bad boy gave me sleepless nights and even had seizure during sleep. I’d dream of playing it, and when I woke up, my hand would be curled like I was still clicking a mouse XD. I never played through the full campaign or spent much time in the vanilla version, but I poured hours into RTR Platinum Edition 2.0. I loved playing as Carthage and conquering the Ptolemies, Iberians, Italics, and Greek Cities. Could never finish the campaing because it crashed on a certain point and rolling back to a older save wouldn't work. Great game, and defenitely recommended, if you have an older machine, could never make it work on a some-what high-end laptop.

While Total War: Rome Remastered is objectively superior in terms of graphics, performance, and modern compatibility, there are still compelling reasons to pick up the original Rome: Total War—especially for veterans or curious newcomers wanting to experience the game as it was originally intended. ✅ Nostalgia For many of us, this was the game that introduced us to the Total War series. The charm, the music, the old-school atmosphere—it all hits differently. It’s not just a game, it’s a time capsule. ✅ The Original UI This might be subjective, but many players (myself included) find the original interface more intuitive, streamlined, and less cluttered than that of the remaster. It's simple, efficient, and gets the job done without excess. ✅ Modding Legacy While the remaster now supports modding and many beloved classic mods are being ported over (along with impressive new projects), there are still fantastic mods only available on the original—such as Invasio Barbar...

Of the Total War series, Rome will always be one of my favorites. Probably due to how easy it was to create new generals and family members. I made my dad a General and conquered the world with him. My dad died in 2013, and I'm not sure he really would have appreciated being someone who took over the world. But I still have the files ready to go if I ever want to pretend my dad is still part of the world.
