Scanner Sombre is one of those games where a few self-proclaimed smart people insist it’s not really a game. Let’s not get too pedantic about it and, for simplicity’s sake, let's just call it an “experience.” Beyond that, for some players or “experience enjoyers” - it’s not scary enough to truly call it horror, so why not go with "mystery." And while we’re already tossing around names and labels, some called it a “tech demo” and another one thought it was “flat.” So here’s my take on that. The game is an atmospheric experience that, if placed on a spectrum, leans a bit toward light or mild horror elements, while offering a type of exploration that feels quite different from what we’re all used to. A major contributor to the atmosphere is the sound design, which, while not brilliant, is applied thoughtfully and effectively enough to create immersion. The same goes for the music, it’s used very sparingly, which I personally would have preferred to see (o...

In Scanner Sombre, the LIDAR scanner is your lifeline. Armed with this innovative tool, you reveal the unseen by casting light into the abyss, slowly mapping the cave around you. As the silence presses in, and shadows twist, the scanner’s color-coded beams uncover hidden dangers and untold mysteries lurking in the dark.

Scanner Sombre features a striking visual style built around vibrant, rainbow-colored point clouds, inspired by industrial LIDAR scans. Players use a handheld scanner to gradually reveal the environment, with color-coded points helping to perceive depth. This distinctive, inhuman aesthetic creates an eerie atmosphere and enhances the exploration experience.

In Scanner Sombre, the story unfolds subtly through the environment, with hints of forgotten histories hidden within the cave. A short but thoroughly engaging and fun experience. At $6 full price and $1.79 on sale, this game is a no brainer price-wise. It is tagged as horror, but really, this is mostly just a walking simulator with light suspense elements. The "horror" elements probably last 2 minutes total and at most worth a startle or two. Definitely not horror to me, but lightly spooky. While the game is fairly short at precisely 2 hours, I can attest to the quality of those two hours. I have introduced this game to three other people and they have all completed the game in a single 2-hour sitting, enthralled the entire time. The sense of exploration is addicting. Trust me, this game is worth your time.
Very unique game and great story.
i really enjoyed the story telling. really interesting when you play it a second time. the dialog has a completely different meaning. :)
Neat visually but not a whole lot else. The game-play is extremely dull and fails to take advantage of the deprivation of information the scanner could create. The sound design is poorly mixed and harsh on the ears, and the level design and plot are extremely uninspired, and fail to make use of the game's setting. Only maybe worth it to maybe check it out if its on sale and seems neat.
I should have bought this game 8 years ago
Amazing game. So amazing that it scared me straight to never leave my wife and 2 kids to go cave diving through 2inch entrances 10/10 calm game until it isn't calming anymore.
Unique game, definitely worth to check in VR
It was a fun experience. Connecting the dots at the end was indeed, sombre.
Short but fun. Not as horror-centric as I first believed (and as I rushed through most of the game). Worth getting when its on sale.
