Star Rogue has come a long way with the latest update. The controller scheme is more responsive but I'm still don't know how to activate special abilities (and one run I accidently went back to the start screen by pressing the back button!) Each character now has a set weapon and attitude fleshing them out a little and this has challenged me to get a little further into the game which I am now enjoying much more. If a Sci-Fi/Side Scrolling/Platform/Roguelike sounds appealing to you, then give this game a shot.

TLDR: PROs: +++ tight controls +++ challenging gameplay: you need to be careful from the first to the last room ++ a lot of items, choice between 2 random items after each room bring interesting build decisions ++ different characters that really empower different approaches + nice music that matches the atmosphere + character quotes after each room CONs: - can be frustrating, if that is a problem for you (don't give up too fast - you'll become better soon!) - i almost alway forget to use the abilities, but that might be just me :P After reading a short blog entry of Mike Matei [1] yesterday about "small games", i checked my game list on steam which ones of the games i own matched the points made on that list... It turns out it's the games i like the most: Risk of Rain, Hotline Miami, Super Meatboy, Devil Daggers... These came to mind before i checked, but i completely forgot about Star Rogue which i played about a year ago for the first time and was only able to beat the game wi...
This is quite an interesting game... it reminds me of Jump'n'Run games like Contra and Metroid but also have the feeling of Roguelikes like Binding of Isaac. Maybe it's best compared to Risk of Rain, though it's also quite different in some way :) The gameplay is fun and challenging, though it can be frustrating from time to time dying the same time over and over again. Some enemies are funny, some other are really annoying to play against. I hope there will be more different rooms in the final version! I'm excited to see what's coming next for the game!
