About the Game

Shadow Tactics is a hardcore tactical stealth game set in Japan around the Edo period.

Take control of a team of deadly specialists and sneak in the shadows between dozens of enemies. Choose your approach when infiltrating mighty castles, snowy mountain monasteries or hidden forest camps. Set traps, poison your opponents or completely avoid enemy contact.

The group is composed of very different personalities. Working together as a team seems impossible at first. Yet over the course of many missions, trust is won and friendships are made. The characters develop their own dynamic and each member will have to face their own personal demons.

One of the leaders of this team is Hayato, an agile ninja, who clears the way through his enemies silently, with his sword and shuriken. Samurai Mugen prefers a more powerful approach and can defeat more fiends at one time, but thus also forfeiting flexibility. Aiko is a master of camouflage when she distracts enemies disguised as a Geisha. And the street child Yuki places traps and decoys enemies towards their deadly fate. The mysterious marksman Takuma however, relies on his sniper rifle and takes care of the enemies from a distance.

The player has to carefully evaluate his options in order to master the challenging missions: how will the characters behave as a team? Which one is best equipped for each task? How can they best master the given missions? Come up with your own ingenious tactics to vanquish enemies and complete missions.

  • Play as five completely different characters with their unique skill set
  • Conquer seemingly impossible challenges where you are outnumbered ten to one
  • Find dozens of ways to take out your opponents the way you want
  • Jump from roof to roof and climb large buildings to attack the enemy from above
  • Explore beautiful environments of ancient Japan in the Edo era
  • Choose from three difficulty levels to match your skill

I spent over 30 hours silently removing people from existence and hiding their bodies in bushes like a very polite serial killer. If you've ever wanted to be a ninja, a samurai, and a walking HR violation all at once, this game gets you. Each mission is a puzzle box. You sneak, stab, lure, distract, and always hide the body because apparently, guards get upset when they see their friend taking a dirt nap in broad daylight. Lord Noburu? Absolute worst. I might have missed killing off one developer, might go through it all again someday. Final thoughts: This game makes you feel smart... until you quicksave into a bad decision. A true trailblazer for the stealth tactics genre, and an absolute delight for all you sneaky sneaks. Play it. Kill (or I guess knock guards out, meh) silently. Hide the bodies. Regret nothing.

this game is absolutely one of the best games i ever played ...everything is simple .. sometimes you need to be fast , sometimes you need to be slow and smart ... to me that's a solid 10 out of 10

After 4-5 hours and completing several missions, Shadow Tactics feels more like a rigid puzzle game than the creative stealth experience I was hoping for. Coming from games like Hitman and Dishonored where you have multiple approaches and can experiment with different solutions, this felt surprisingly limiting. Every guard is watched by others, creating tedious chains where you must clear entire sections just to eliminate one target. Despite large maps, there's typically only one viable path forward. The game is well-crafted and polished, but it becomes monotonous quickly. Each area feels like solving the same puzzle: figure out the correct elimination sequence, execute it perfectly, repeat. If you enjoy pure logic puzzles with a stealth theme, you might love this. If you're looking for the emergent gameplay and creative problem-solving of games like Hitman, you'll likely find it frustrating.

Shadow Tactics is a pretty fun game, it offers isometric stealth gameplay with decent freedom of approach, the playable characters are varied and let you pull off interesting synergies and combo takedowns. I personally liked that you can also make some of your kills look like accidents (similar to Hitman). There are only 13 missions, however they are diverse, they escalate in challenge as well as length and overall the game clocks in at around 20 to 30 hours depending on what difficulty you play on (I played on Hardcore). One thing that should be mentioned for sure is that this is a trial and error type of game where you have to quicksave and quickload all the time until you get to the desired outcome and retrying same sections over and over in some lengthier missions may put some people off a little bit. Anyways, I bought Shadow Tactics for like 2 or 3 dollars and for that price a 20 to 30 hour game with decently fun mechanics and very good polish is really good value so it's a no...

This game is fine. This game is competently made, I think that a lot of care and design went into it. I would even go so far as to say that this is a GOOD game. But I cannot for the life of me bring myself to keep playing it. I like Ninja/Samurai games, and I like Stealth Games. I even like a few RTS games. However, this fusion of ideas and mechanics PERSONALLY* has led me somewhere between boredom and frustration. It's true that I don't have a lot of hours in this game, but I have attempted revisiting it multiple times within the past month and a half. It doesn't do it for me, maybe it'll do it for you. I feel obliged to give this game a thumbs up (because again, IT'S NOT BAD, I just don't like it).

Love the game! I am in general a big fan of these strategy games as one of the first games I ever played on my first PC was Commandos, so these kind of strategy games have a special place in my hearth.
