Torchlight, developed by Runic Games and released in 2009, is an action role-playing game that embraces the core tenets of the dungeon-crawling genre while infusing it with a distinctive charm, vibrant art style, and satisfying combat mechanics. While it doesn’t seek to radically reinvent the ARPG wheel, it excels at delivering a polished and accessible experience that captures the essence of loot-driven progression and hack-and-slash gameplay. In many ways, Torchlight feels like a spiritual successor to Diablo II, and that’s no accident—several of the game’s developers, including Travis Baldree and the Schaefer brothers, were key figures behind Blizzard’s genre-defining classic. Set in the mining town of Torchlight, the game introduces players to a world where Ember, a powerful magical resource, is both a blessing and a curse. The narrative is relatively straightforward, functioning more as a backdrop than a focal point, but it does its job of motivating the player to desce...

It's simple, maybe even a bit barebones, but the gameplay loop is solid, the cartoony visuals are well crafted and have aged extremely well. I'll stay for a bit before jumping into Torchlight 2 since I'm told it polishes everything further, but as a pretty and competently made time sink from more than a decade ago, this is gold. But be warned, you CAN'T respec skills without mods or the cheat console. If you assign a point or stat, it remains there forever. This is mostly important if you are only planning to run it ONCE as, if you plan on making multiple runs with each class it's just a matter of reaching level 30, retiring, and trying again. With the heirlooms and shared stash it would barely take a few hours. Also, start on the third difficulty option. I reached the 25ft floor of Normal as a Destroyer by merely spamming the basic skill, upgrading my stats and taking whatever equipment had the highest numbers and pretty colors. And even then I just started spending skill points...

While I think the 2nd game is superior in nearly every way, this is still an enjoyable experience. The game's art style looks great even today, despite being from 2009. If you are a fan of ARPGs, grab it; if you are new, I would recommend Torchlight 2. 7/10

Diablo 2 at home. Fun enough for what it is, but very raw and basic, and has a lot of little issues and annoyances (like no ability to respec).
