Master of Orion 2

It's a classic space empire building game. Nowadays it mostly presents historical interest, the UI is too much of a hassle to deal with. But then again, while playing it you will weep about most modern similar games failing to deliver the galaxy that feels so varied and alive. If you do play it I recommend applying 1.50 unofficial patch and keeping the difficulty low. I'd also recommend trying Remnants of the Precursors - a free remake/spritual successor of Master of Orion 1 and probably the only modern game that delivers a similar feeling of infinite variation and well-tuned AI. Be aware that I'm not praising capabilities of a very simple AI that had to perform well on hardware made 30 years ago. I'm talking about the way the mechanics and computer players using them are tuned. It's very sad that later games, even the ones emulating MoO2, don't pick up all the tricks this game plays to make you feel like you're operating in a living universe and not just doing citibuilding among oth...

This one works great in linux and windows. I think I made a small tweak to setup script to play it on a raspberry pi with steam even.

This is the GOAT of the 4X strategy games. Sure, its ancient with very few resources to help new players but it it that sweet spot between complexity and simplicity all the way back in the 1996 and everyone else has been trying and failing to copy the game ever since. DO NOT PLAY MOO3, that game is garbage compared to this masterpiece.

This game was awesome when it came out and is still fun today. Especially in multiplayer. Just go to moo2mod and download fan patch. Then to play multiplayer select client in network and connect to moo2.dopefish.com. Highly recommended!

The absolute GOAT. The great of all time, King of all strategy games. Forget MOO3, its trash, and the reboot too. MOO2 have run in dosbox, even so his graphic design is aging like expensive wine. The rules for research, exploration, colonization, production, a combat are awesome. If someone just make a updated version for better graphics without changing the rules, this would be a Game of the Year in its genre at any time. Many indeed try it to copy MOO2, and fail. If you dont have this one in your game library, you are not a fun of strategy games or dislike sci-fi.

Love the game but unfortunately DOSbox hangs and many times doesn't open the initial menu screen properly. After that it won't allow menu selection and you end up closing and reopening numerous times to get a good initial game load.

I used to play this game in the 90s, Ive never found a more modern equivalent. Still a great game!

They made Master of Orion better with this follow up. The Master of Orion series (not counting 3) is the foundation which all space exploration games are set upon. It launched the genre. Yes while this game came out in the mid 90's and you can tell. It is still fun to load up and play every now and then. You know a game that is actually complete when they release it :O).

(Have 0.3 hours because im playing with the 1.50 patch, steam don't register the time, and i *STRONGLY* suggest patching the game for a smooth gameplay) Man this game felt satistfying even on tutor difficulty, at turn 384, i became the Master of Orion ;) They don't call it the king of the 4x genre for nothing. Insane replayability and depth for a 28 old game.
