I absolutely love games like these; in fact I wish there were more on Steam. Monsterland plays out like like Doom in ASCII. It is fast paced, gory, and full of violence. Keyboard-only controls work great, especially for laptops. The sound and voice work was a welcome surprise in something of this calibre. Pros: +Quite atmospheric - reminds me of the dark rooms and flickering lights reminiscint of the Doom series +Fast paced action is really fun +Its too cheap - even if I payed 10 times this amount (seriously), I wouldn't be disapointed +Controls are great +Runs on a toaster +Menu system feels well developed Cons: -The storepage claims it is a short game, which is fine overall, but hey sometimes more is more am-I-right :D C'mon its less than a buck. What are you waiting for?

-Sees game in store. -"Hmmmmm... That looks like 'Dead Colony' a bit" -Watches trailer. -"...HOLY COW, it IS Dead Colony!" -Presses the crap out of "buy" button! -10/10, would fire up Desura client again! So, my "time played" won't be very long as of writing, but had to point out that this is a re-launch of one of my favorite Desura games, now come to Steam under the name, "Monsterland". The new look adds a good deal "character" to the game. For the price of $0.89 at the time of writing, you should defiitely give it a go!

It has a DOS-like feel. Something that I like and dislike at the same time. Controls seem a bit imprecise. For instance tapping the 'W' key quickly should move me one unit, not two or more. Price to content ratio is beyond satisfactory and I foresee myself playing more of this during the upcoming months. To get a better idea of what the gameplay looks like check out a little video I did. https://youtu.be/L1Bs-KuPOJo Happy gaming.

Monsterland feels in some ways like it was based on DoomRL... which is kind of funny, given that DoomRL was, as the name indicates, a roguelike based off of Doom, a first-person shooter. Monsterland takes that back to the Doom formula in terms of having six handmade levels and being a fast-paced action game. It's less solid than DoomRL, but DoomRL is one of the more interesting free roguelikes out there, so I'm not going to fault it too much for that. Monsterland is honestly a pretty amusing action game, but it also gets rather frustrating at times. When the developer says "Game can be saved and loaded at any time. Because sometimes, you just eat a rocket to the face." it's ... pretty accurate, though suddenly running into chaingunners (teal Ms) or the few NRG-8000 enemies (bright yellow Ms) was just as bad. Dying or taking excessive damage from opening a door or blasting through a fragile wall into a pile of BS that you didn't expect is unfortunately common, but you can save at any p...

Don't be fooled by the graphics: This isn't a Roguelike, it's a top-view Doom! I had a copy of this way back in the early 00s and loved it, and was thrilled to see it's on Steam. It's heavy on the atmosphere, despite being just ASCII graphics. It uses sound effects, story cues, and fading colors in a surprisingly moody way, and is a lot of fun to boot. I've got Doom 2016 in the other room, but have been playing this instead. Now, the bad points: I do think it's a little too easy to kick the bucket sometimes-- it would be improved if there were less need for level memorization. I also wish the enemies didn't score damage when they are simply adjacent to you. They should have to be adjacent for a short period of time (like the pink demons in Doom)-- otherwise they'll score hits instantly when you open the door, even though you can minimize it by getting ready to back up fast. But despite the few issues it's a compelling play and well worth the 99 cents. I hope they make another or maybe ...

I beat the first level! It was hard! But not impossible. Pretty fun. Then I died in level 2 and lost all my gear. Whoops.
