About This Game

After an affair King Lucas had with the Witch of Sausan, the Queen left him and remarried in an adjacent kingdom, and now his daughters are the only ones left at his side. Due to his love for them, each and every time they get lost in the castle, he moves heaven and earth to get them back and he only resorts to the most intrepid knights in order to find them. Will you be one of those knights?

Play for the favour of King Lucas and the three princesses' love. A castle will be randomly built and you must find them inside a little area of it. You can move horizontally and vertically through the rooms until you reach your goal. Once you succeed, the castle will become a little bit more difficult: a larger area will be unlocked... and the experience will become more hardcore when the princess becomes lost inside a fully unlocked castle with more than 1,000 rooms.

Features:

 • Get money and buy upgrades such us compasses and crystal balls, more weapons such us magical sticks and swords, or harder shields to protect yourself from the giant spiders, the armored rats, the piranhas and the many other haunted beings in the castle.

 • Enroll for collective multiplayer searches where you will be able to compete with your friends or with other unknown players. It’s simple: one princess, one winner... the first to find her.

 • Talk and interact with a lot of NPCs who will play different funny and unexpected roles through your quest (yes, there's some hidden story underneath the arcade!).

We absolutely love retro gaming and this has been engrained in King Lucas's DNA. This is a metroidvania game with 2.5D graphics and classic game mechanics for the delight of platform, action and adventure games lovers as well as you who didn't live the 80's and 90's; this is an opportunity for you to taste a bit of that classic feeling with the graphics and sound quality of today.

King Lucas' castle is made up of hundreds of interconnected rooms, which are reconfigured every time a new search begins. These rooms have been hand designed one by one (we don´t use procedural level design!) and there's no two equal gameplays. Lava pits, water tunnels, ladders, traps... this castle has become a deadly place since the queen left.

The simplistic and shallow gameplay would be acceptable in a student project, but really isn't worth paying money for. You just wander from room to randomly arranged room until you find the princess, dealing with crappy combat and dull platforming along the way. Picking up a few coins to buy keys, health potions, and slightly less terrible weapons does not make this a Metroidvania either. Playing this multiplayer doesn't add much; the game plays almost identical to the single player, and there's no direct interaction with the other players. At most they'll kill a few enemies for you, or find the princess first, giving you the perfect excuse to stop playing.

Unfortunately this game doesnt offer much for its price tagg. It may be randomly generated, but your fun factor will stay at the same low point each time you play.
Pros:
+ the music is fitting + the artstyle is neat + controller support + randomly generated + a variety of enemies and traps + kid-friendly humor + online multiplayer + finding the princess is a challenge + purchasable gear, like weapons, shields, potions
Cons:
- gameplay is too easy, good enough for small kids, but boring for anybody else - although its randomly generated, its going to feel like the same thing all over very soon - no local multiplayer, which would have been the better choice - online multiplayer is dead - way too overpriced - the gameplay stays the same, the map just gets bigger each time you find a princess, not much fun - no immunity after getting hit, means you can get comboed to death real quick - it doesnt feel rewarding, you get gold for completing a map, but have to spend it ...

Much better than the average retro-platformer out there, but a bit more expensive, as well. Is it worth it? Well, from the aspect of quality, it is. Full controller support (steam or not), fully configurable keys (with the exception of dashing, which is a bit annoying), triple-os support (windows, linux, mac), nice and smooth looks, with an appealing pseudo-3D perpective that is not obvious from the screenshots. The sound ain't bad, too. As for the gameplay, it's not one more of the 'same', which is the common rule of most platformers. On the contrary, it introduces a few nice and simple ideas: for example, I like the idea of knowing exactly where my character is (using an open-world-map), and I love the "now replay on a larger map, continuing with same character" concept. It gives small moments of satisfaction without the need to finish the game at once. I also like its "rogue-like, but not unforgiving" philosophy. Common ideas are there, too, like the a-bit-of-rpg style, expressed wi...

King Lucas meets its mark as an exploration adventure set in a large world, but it lacks the polish and finesse that would make it truly shine out among others. I did complete all ten levels of the single player mode, and I'll admit that the challenge of navigating through such a large world was fun. The game provides a limited number of tools that, when used efficiently, allowed me to finish the game in about 8 hours of playtime. I like the novel twist on level design, with an evolving castle on a scale that reminded me of the maze from the World's Largest Dungeon pen and paper RPG. The dialogue presents the first challenge to seamless gameplay, with errors in grammar and syntax that appear to be more than just oversights in translation. The attempts at humor by the NPCs are cringeworthy, and not in a good way; cultural references are thrown in at odd places, and most of the jokes feel forced. Few of the NPCs have any relevance to the game itself, which at first leads to a lot of w...

Was expecting a gameplay and controls at least as polished as Rogue Legacy. I don't really care if the graphics are dull and childish, that is fine if the game itself is fun to play, but this game really doesn't feel like it's complete. The controls are very generic, the battles are all the same, your weapon stats is all that changes. The enemies are not hard. The only thing making the game 'hard' is it's damn bad physics.

King Lucas is a damn fine game. As previously mentioned by other reviewers it is slightly Metroidvania with a hint of Rogue Legacy. It's more than that though. It takes me back to the fun of great exploratory platformers of the 8-bit 80's. The game is certainly vast and the rooms vary in design. This type of game will never be for everyone, but it's a style often overlooked and I'm proud to have it in my ever dense Steam collection, where I often forget I even own a game.

It's pretty cheap to be this long. It doesn't get repetitive, at least for me, cause you upgrade your items and each room is different. Worth it.

Well worth the sale price. Not really a Metroidvania, that's a bit misleading so don't let that tag scare you away. It's really a simple platformer with a very old school feel. Very simple game, navigate rooms full of traps and monsters to rescue the princess. Each time you rescue her, the castle gets bigger and you do it again. If you like games like Montezuma's Revenge or Spelunky this will be right up your alley.
