Psychonauts

Psychonauts is a treasure from a bygone era, an action platformer collectathon. Just replayed it and finally went for 100%, and it still holds up astonishingly well. Cutscenes are a little fuzzy, having been pre-rendered in ages past, so on modern systems the in-engine graphics will actually be superior. A few annoying collectibles to find, a slightly aggravating final level, but the controls are remarkably tight and the story is simple but good and the characters are interesting and memorable. It's not for nothing that I now have all 3 games that exist of the series at 100% achievement completion.

I never reviewed Psychonauts despite it being a formative game that I grew up with, I've recently revisited it to get the 100% and despite the amount of collectibles I was surprised to find that it wasn't so bad, I had a lot of fun! Despite being 20 years old now, the stylized graphics hold up really well on higher resolutions, the only thing that holds the game back a bit is the controls. I'd love to see Psychonauts on the Psychonauts 2 engine for improved platforming feel and better telekinesis. They've joked about Psychonauts HD but man it'd be great to get it. The story is where the game SHINES. They say every games world is a character, but in this game the CHARACTERS are literally the WORLDS. Entering minds to see representations of the characters, whether natural or fabricated, is spectacularly cleverly done, and helping characters overcome mental issues and traumas is tastefully done for the most part. I went into Psychonauts blind after a work friend told me it was their favourite game. I remembered being curious back when it first released, but never tried it. And wow, what a pleasant surprise. The quirky characters and humorous writing are instantly lovable. Each mind you explore is a surreal playground, overflowing with creativity and unforgettable ideas. Psychic kids at a summer camp sounds lighthearted, but the game balances that whimsy with darker psychological themes, trauma, paranoia, regret, identity, and it all comes together beautifully. That said, the game definitely shows its age. Camera control and combat have the stiffness of early 2000s games, and the clunky platforming and collision detection can be frustrating at times. But underneath that, the sheer creativity and imagination shine through. Psychonauts isn’t perfect mechanically, but its creativity, humour, and heart make it a platformer that has truly stood the test of time.

Im completely obsessed with this game, I loved all the different characters, their designs, VA, vibes and their mental worlds. The soundtrack is fun, the story is creative and overall everything was just perfect.

RAZ IS THE GOAT

Literally one of the best games I have ever played. This game made me want to MAKE a platformer. The story is great and the feeling from the ending wants you to 100% the game. I would recommend buying the game even when it's not on sale.

I've played this many times and it's one of my favorite games of all time. Great movement, hilarious dialogues, amazing story. 10/1O
