For just under $13 CAD, this game was a pleasant surprise. I was looking for something to scratch that classic, 16-bit strategy RPG itch, and this title delivered. It doesn't do anything crazy, but it understands what makes the genre enjoyable and provides a solid experience from start to finish. The tactical gameplay is engaging and well-executed. It features that familiar feeling from older titles, where you're carefully considering each unit's position and planning your turns to overwhelm your enemy while training your civilians. The core loop is satisfying, and I enjoyed the challenge presented by the map layouts and enemy variety. There's a good amount of content here, with 47 levels and a large roster of playable characters to build your army from. TL;DR A fairly basic and simple FE-like game, that's nevertheless enjoyable enough. Like most games made with SRPG Studio, the basic gameplay of Stranger Saga is very much in-line with classic Fire Emblem games (FE 6-8). So if you have played any of them it should feel pretty familiar. You have your classes and promotions, rng-growths, and your square grid-based movement. The game does have its own idiosyncrasies: there are no consumable items (except on the easiest difficulty), weapons have infinite durability, and bows and magic have much higher range than usual. Most of the recruits in this game start as Civilians and can be promoted into any of the basic classes, so there's a lot of flexibility in that regard. As far as FE-likes go, Stranger Saga ranges on the more easy/casual side, there's no permadeath nor any kind of penalty for units being defeated, they just retreat and come back fresh next stage, and enemies generally deal low enough damage you don't have to worry as much a...
